Dreams of flesh
Dreams of flesh
Dreams of Flesh is a sci-fi horror film completed in 2024, where Davide Pesca is the writer and director along with co-writer Fabrizio Pastura. The film is part three of a trilogy of Pesca’s cyberpunk features, originating from Night of Doom and continued by Re-Flesh in the years 2021 and 2022 respectively. A well known name in the extreme cinema genre, David has created several horrifying shorts for such anthology films as: Deep Web XXX (2018), A Taste of Phobia (2018), and Faces of Fear (2020). He also participated in the documentary Gorenography (2021) alongside Mercedes The Muse, Jonathan Doe, Town Newton and others.
Dov Lovo, a doctor at the Neovita clinic, tries other methods, similar to electric shock therapy, focused on the stimulation of the pineal gland and VR in an attempt to help the doctor heal his and the patient’s psychophysical ailments but to no avail.
With dreams of flesh, there are no expositions as it takes us directly into the use of VR technology in ways that are not gaming related as this setting is very familiar. And when this banal idea is reinvented in a dark yet pragmatic way, it is impossible not to feel the collapse of our culture within the dystopian perspectives of our own walls, more so because stereoscopic videos were layered with other similar devices that are all but different from conventional VR equipment in this sub-genre, as Stuart Gordon did through a resonator in 1986’s From Beyond by harnessing the stimulating power of the pineal gland and The Resonator API: a device that allows the stimulation of the pineal gland.
There are no gaps in cinematography for the duration of the movie – each and every frame has something to speak for itself. It is so impressive how much of effort must be put to portray the imagery’s vibrancy in here; most shots are steady close-ups that zoom in and out but there are also quite a few wide establishing ones to mix things up a bit. The bright neon lighting – applied all through the film – has no doubt cybergoth sources but these amazing uncouth artificial colors combined with deep red that slices the action like glass do more than a mere how the treatment of nature & mechanic takes place.
Performing development wise, Dreams Of Flesh have its ups and downs: while there are some cast effective at digitally portraying the misery, there are some who are completely ineffective. Most of the roles are physical (without speaking) where each performer dedicates his time on the screen to in fact self inflicted torment. However, it is not until Ivan Brusa when we hear a single actor speak – he plays the protagonist Dr Lovo – and he only quickly crams in most of the film’s action by heavy narration, it becomes apparent that such narration could only be delivered or acted out prior to such a sequence, all else simply becomes bland and rhythm of the already more than set pace is broken.
The entire foundation of this film lies in its visual appeal as it explores the possible future. It is an entertaining cyberpunk-dystopia that does what it is supposed to with the story, visuals, effects, etc., yet it adheres to the foundation of the “Torture Porn” sub genre.
