Owen Daybright is a ranch foreman for Colorado cattleman Arch Strobie, who happens to be Owen’s foster dad. While Owen is in the company of his foster brother Lee Strobie at a local saloon, they learn that Lily Fasken has given birth to a baby. The attending doctor explains that he was never summoned during the delivery. Lee expresses strong overinterest in the new birth. Meanwhile, Owen visits Lily with food and money, only to discover Jen Lee’s wife -and husband Dick waiting for him at home. Dick has spent the entire day trying to unravel the mystery of who impregnated Lily. Meanwhile, Owen is left anxious by the thought of how much trouble Lily is going to get herself into. When Jen asks about the father, Owen conveniently gives her a shrug as a reply. It looks as if Dick is at a loose end because he thinks Owen is the imposter father, but Jen puts him straight because Owen is a good man.
While at the saloon, Lee expresses his utmost gratitude to Owen for having helped him cover the real odds, claiming that he would be in dire trouble if he ever told Jen that he’s the real father. Owen appears to be getting a little out of control as he gallantly reveals that his magic powers would never get exposed to Jen’s sight. However, things get out of hand as Dick storms in and threatens Owen with a gun. Luckily for Owen, they are interrupted by the sheriff.
Owen reveals to Arch at the Strobie ranch, that he is free to go as Lee is married now and Lee has been a cripple for 20 years and he didn’t want Arch’s help anymore. Arch explains, that to keep Lee in check and run the ranch, he needed Owen’s assistance, which he still does. Thus, Owen decides to stay.
Owen also reveals that Lily and Dick’s brother Hub has arrived via train and is keen to raise some havoc. Owen observes that Hub is looking for a victim to unleash himself but doesn’t yet seem to know who to target. Dick tells Jen he is planning to solve the issue by interviewing Owen. Dick and his brother Hub arrive shortly after. While Lily is being watched by a ranch hand, Dick and Owen get into a scuffle, only for Lily to enter with a gun and put a stop to the fight. She proactively orders Owen to take her brothers to the sheriff.
Jen is mad after learning that Lee withdrew $500 from their shared account. When Jen confronts Lee he claims that Owen is the father of Lillian’s baby, which Jen doesn’t believe. Jen states that she is considering leaving, but Owen tells her not to because Arch needs them both. Later on, Lee finds out that Jen has changed the locks to their bedroom closet. He tells Arch that he doesn’t want to depend on anybody anymore. Arch wonders what he will have to do for Lee to change his mind. Lee suggests that Arch should give him a half share of the ranch. Arch allows it, but with reluctance because Owen will take the other half when Arch leaves the ranch or passes away.
Owen and Lee, along with Hewie, trace four of their stolen steers to Herb Beckett’s. Though Owen attempts to prove that the four steers are with Backett, he fails miserably. This leads him to beat Backett, who exposes him to a knife in the process. In turn, he and Hewie manage to escape with Beckett’s four steers which are used as compensation. While Lee is indifferent to the quarrel, he tries to pay Backett for the four steers. To Lee’s surprise, Beckett agrees to the arrangement but insists that he will take their revenge on Owen. Lee is unconcerned. First, at a party on their ranch, during the party, Lee, who is a bit too drunk, predicts that Jen and Owen are together after Jen is done treating Owen.
Lee conspires with Backett to ensure that Dick and Hub are recruited for the spring roundup as soon as they are released from prison. This enables them to pursue Owen. The roundup is divided into eastern and western sections: Owen and the Strobie ranch hands occupy one section while Lee and the Fasken brothers, whom he claims to know but does not like, are in the other. Lee plans to sell the Strobe steers to Dave Allard. Allard gallops on ahead to the telegraph office to have the money placed in escrow. Unfortunately, in a heavy downpour, Allard does not reach the telegraph office but instead goes to Owen’s camp. He informs Owen he has purchased the Strobe cattle. Owen is taken aback but does not say anything to Allard. Later, he tells Hewie that he thought Lee might do something like this. The truth is that Hewie indeed has some feelings for Lily. When the two divisions have their first meetings, Owen tells Lee he is aware of everything. Hewie recognizes the Faskens and tells Owen. Owen understands that Lee must have been aware of everything but chose not to share any of it with him.
Lee later informs Owen that he has made a decision and will no longer be selling the property to Allard, but he wants Owen to accompany him so he can help him in terminating the deal. For now, the Faskens are lying in wait for Owen. Faskens shoots Owen off his horse. He gets hit but is not seriously injured. Lee rides off. Hewie hears the gunshots and takes a few men with him to investigate the situation. Owen succeeds in shooting Dick and, as Hud notices Hewie and others are present, he speeds off, getting himself shot once within range of the others. Owen manages to get back on his horse, and heads in pursuit of Lee. On the other hand, Lee tumbles off his horse while trying to cross a river, which is when Owen finally gets to him. Owen turns to Lee and tells him that he will explain everything to Arch, to which Lee responds by saying that is not going to happen because he believes he is faster on the draw than Owen. Owen, however, beats him to the draw, shooting and killing him instead.
Owen gives a detailed version of the story to Arch. “It is quite clear to me you have only yourself to blame; you never bothered the straighten Lee out,” Arch tells Owen.
