Now we have the film that we all were waiting for, and that is Night of the Harvest which feels like the present-day slasher title that one could find in your video rental stores (does sound complimentary but it still isn’t). This is an independent house-made film and there are only a few people involved in it. Most of them are either in front of the camera or behind the camera. All this makes it a bit complicated to analyze these types of films. It is an important part of modernization or rather one part of what is tagged as development. But then again it is quite intriguing to say about the die-hard creators who do everything possible and impossible to achieve their goals.
Night of the Harvest was co-directed by Christopher M. Carter and Jessica Morgan and that story was conceived by Carter together with Morgan who also wrote the screenplay. Furthermore, Morgan has also featured in the film alongside Brittany Isabell. All three, Carter, Morgan, and Isabell are credited as producers. Photography was done by Carter and Isbell was in charge of stunt coordination. As I said, it’s a small crew serving many functions.
Madison (Isabell) survived a brutal assassination attempt a year back, however, the trauma has left her scarred, and she recently shifted into the house of her elder sister Audrey (Morgan) who has vowed to protect her. It’s Halloween, and Audrey is throwing a party hoping to entice Dane (Jim Cirner), her boyfriend who, along with his animated friend Will (Aeric Azana), is hoping to set the night ablaze with excitement. While the two have anticipated the event all month, Audrey believes it’ll be conducive for Madison, and hence, persuades her to forcefully attend.
The lovebirds, Riley (Taylor Falshaw) and Jacob (Ashton Jordaan Ruiz), the crazy Joyce (Autumn Gubersky) and Dane’s best friend, who never shuts up, Will (Aeric Azana), were also among the party invites. However, the festivities took a terrifying turn when a maniac wearing a mutilated scarecrow mask butchered all of Madison’s friends with an axe to enjoy the Halloween theme.
Implausibly crafted characters are hurled into the games of a man with a mask while chaos ensures and violence is aplenty, as of now, everything else appears normal. Nonetheless, right at the start, Carter and Morgan do the unthinkable by adding a quick spurt of adrenaline to an otherwise bland plot outline. It is such a change of pace that I can’t dissuade you from indulging in it but it would be unwise to place your trust into these chances that there lies any potential for amusement. This twist in the tale of Night of the Harvest takes it further into violence where it can finally escape the mediocre story of a slasher.
Sadly, not every element is as it should be. A whole storyline exists which, at some point, begs the question of why the evil force is so eager to get its hands on the bloody harvest, but it feels out of place. More effort would have been needed in that regard. Some of the actors are tough to ignore. Their approaches are dripping with over-the-top melodrama, which hinders their performance. Given my admiration for this low-budget style slasher film, I am unable to tear it to shreds. For these reasons, it is impossible to recommend with complete certainty. But everyone who is such a strong devotee of the genre will also love this film, as well as all inventors of various films in the genre.
