The Red Scare suspense film of the 1950s was well handled by veteran television director Paul Guilfoyle and was masterfully scripted by Charles Lang.
The SS Banos freighter is attacked by torpedoed at sea by communist agents. Clegg, a radioman aboard the vessel, is the sole survivor from the attack, and later on is hired to work alongside Captain Scarface, a newly appointed commander for the SS Banos. Unknown to Clegg, Captain Scarface is the chief commander in a rouse to annihilate the Panama Canal using an Atomic bomb concealed within the ship.
Scarface told Clegg to report to the hotel ‘Los Rios’ in the port town of San Brejo where he was to get a payment of $5000 for his work of not reporting the ship’s destruction. Along the way, Clegg was attacked by Kroll, who double-crossed him, and Clegg was murdered. Whilst trying to flee with the money, Clegg was killed by Manuel, the hotel owner.
In self-defense, Sam Wilton (Leif Erickson) winded up injuring the S.A. plantation owner. Samuel was an American working on the plantation and now he was frightened for his life as he imagined himself getting imprisoned by law enforcement who might not be willing to believe his side of the story. While escaping from the plantation, Manueal offers Wilton to borrow Kroll’s passport which he alters the photo of, to board the Banos. Aboard the jet, he meets Dr. Yeager (Rudolph Anders), a German atomic scientist who along with Kroll, escaped from a Russian Prison. Dr. Yeager plans on reuniting with his daughter Elsa (Virginia Grey) and flees to America, however, things take a dark turn when Dr. Yeager is confronted by Scarface who orders him to help demolish the Panama Canal under the threat of violence.
With the help of several American tourists on board, the civil passengers, like Isabel Randolph, Howard Wendell, and don Dilliday, defeat the bad passengers.
Neither the critics nor the audience paid due attention to the movie during its release, however, people did start watching it thanks to its occasional broadcasts on television. It’s a well-crafted thriller that is quite enjoyable.
