Some months back, while browsing on Tubi, I came across this film which had the title, Deadly Game, but was actually called, Catch Me If You Can. Eventually, I got around to watching this film, and wow it was quite a gripping comedy, revolving around two characters, detective Norm Gannon, as well as Nathan Thomas, a quirky twelve year old. So how are these two characters related? Uhhh, viewing a homicide would certainly do the trick.
Let me elaborate, it’s Nathan who witnesses a murder, and Norm is assigned to locate him, which does not settle too well with the hard-bitten investigator. He barely has any true support except for his colleague, Tina Walcott, and when the two of them come face to face, well, it’s explosive. The relationship between the characters is filled with verbal violence and some unknown version of discourse in which Nathan seems to have the upper hand, and it’s even more extreme when it’s one-sided. It seems that Nathan is a step ahead of Norm, which brings us to when he actually shows up at the residence of his ex-wife, Trish Gannon.
The film suggests that this whole case is connected to an infamous criminal Jean Benoit, an incredibly adept money launderer and a counterfeiter (who is portrayed by the Greatest American Hero himself, William Katt). The plot also illustrates that Benoit has a cop on his payroll, and also, we know from his past that he has tortured Norm, and Nathan has a desire to understand what happened. Norm does come across Nathan at an arcade, but much to his bad luck, so did Benoit’s people, which sparked a shootout. Norm is able to reach Nathan’s home, and once Nathan reminds Norm how he found him in the arcade, it causes Norm to uncover the evil mole for the first time.
Who, though, was the police officer that was on Benoit`s payroll? Norm’s primary suspicion was Murdoch, a fellow detective, who expressed his concerns to Tina, and she seemed to align with Norm’s thoughts. We later see Norm find a handful of bills hidden in Murdoch’s desk, which leads to Murdoch’s arrest, of which Tina praises Norm for solving the case. Later, Nathan again calls Norm, but this time from Benoit’s secret location, and he tells Norm what he had gone through that he and his partner were chasing Benoit, but instead encountered one of his subordinates. The subordinate knocked Norm out and put a knife to his throat, forcing his partner, Bobby, to drop his sidearm. And he did, after which the subordinate disposed of Bobby with the same firearm.
It does not take a genius to figure out who is holding the gun that Nathan and Norm hear click. After the two of them hear the gun click, Nathan reveals to Norm his location, and their discussion moves forward. Norm appears very grateful to Nathan for his assistance and cooperation in identifying Murdoch as the inside cop. However, Nathan does not miss out on informing him that he has previously heard Benoit’s accountant claiming that the cop was corrupt and was wired five thousand dollars. Nathan also notes the money found on Murdoch sums up to only 2 thousand two dollars. Nathan suspects that Norm has really been duped, but Norm insists that he and Tina never shared anything about Murdoch with anybody.
It turns out, the evil mole was none other than Tina. In their confrontation, she used a gun to force them both into a warehouse. Inside the place, Benoit was planning to kill Norm while setting the fake money ablaze. Nathan would also be taken out later on. With the gun still being pointed at him, Nathan grabbed Tina in despair because of how terrified he was. With the handcuffs still on Norm, it all turned out to be an elaborate plan to get the key. After Benoit breaks away with Nathan, leaving Tina behind, Norm is somehow able to break free from his constraints and find both Nathan and Benoit. We witness Benoit take Nathan hostage while he has a gun pointed at Nathan’s aide. It was just how the previous scene’s partner had been shot. He orders Nathan to drop his weapon and kick it out of reach, which Garcia does. Instead of the previously seen, he lunged at Benoit, sending the both of them sprawling out. Afterward, we see Norm with notable damages, intense glee washing over him as he watches the headlines. Tina, handcuffed, was arrested alongside Benoit.
Catch Me If You Can was first shown to the public on December 11, 1998, and this film had Catherine Oxenberg depicting the sadistic and diabolical Tina Walcott, who is a character of such evil that she almost singlehandedly justifies watching this film. It was interesting to view the trailer which indicated that the character would be a heel as a corrupt cop. The heel role of Copperhead was so beautifully played by Oxenberg. The storyline introduces Kolb as a genteel person, which is how he is to most. “Beware the nice ones” has some truth in it. When the mask of nice Tina comes off, we see her true self, whom I would describe as “Lady De Winter.” This was a woman utterly without mercy that Tak, in her summation of the action on and off camera, talks about as willing to “do whatever it takes” to cover all traces of corruption. She gave Benoit’s goons Nathan’s address to foil her evil scheme or cover her evil role, planted the money on Murdoch to cover her evil role, and slaughtered Norm and Nathan for her slush fund. Oxenberg was very convincing in depicting said warmth, but the movie’s climax made her excel in the role of copperhead. The cold look that triply appointed her, while Texai so superbly contrasted his voice so much of hers, surprised all of us.
Catherine Oxenberg is mostly known for portraying Amanda Carrington in 54 episodes of the original Dynasty series, but she also played the late Princess Diana in two telefilms. She appeared in two movies with her then husband Casper Van Dien, one including Sleeping Beauty, which was released in 2014, and on TV Oxenberg acted in The Love Boat and Baywatch too.
