Hummingbirds
Hummingbirds
The classification “Hummingbirds” also does no favour to the film, as it pushes the films into the depth of mere documentary. In sharp contrast – best friends and the directors Silvia del Carmen Castanos and Estefania Beba Contreras, – this is absolutely more than that, Self-presentation of the their, call for action, amusing summers with a naughty best friend and its serious remittance story as well, it is difficult to box it, in the first place. While singing, dancing, acting mischief, Silvia and Beba are in the pursuit of making some one label them or some situations such as melodramatic or the circumstances of a border town their lives took over.
Take a shot in the summertime of 2019, and this time “Hummingbirds” does not have any specific narrative structure or a plot to identify. As such, we literally accompany Silvia and Beba as they narrate their life back in Laredo, TX, is a remote and barren town right across Mexico and the opportunities and problems they face as Mexican migrants with unclear destinies. Both of them have had to deal with adult issues at a very tender age, and this kind of fading memory comes back to dominate narrative. Between horse-laughs and sassy comments, Beba narrates an adventure across the border, this time atop her mother’s back, which they call piggy back rides. Real life today is spent waiting for the critical moment when one gains information about his or her immigration status. A real citizenship is a utopian world. Perhaps disappointments can evoke equal pain and giving up.
Though “Hummingbirds” is eventually designated as a summer fling, it does so only in order to stress the individual talents and social activism of the characters’ friends. It is this well-defined absence of a primary narrative that makes it possible for many conversations of an almost real life nature to take place without resorting to any undue promotion. One such friendly exchange during the movie involves Silvia mentioning an abortion she had been through the previous year. Silvia is an accomplished writer and poet in politics as well as a principled Planned Parenthood activist when she is seen not vandalizing anti-abortion posters with her friend Jeffery. BeBa’s bulk also goes for stirring, forceful songs that sound the more anthems of their heart-sisterhood.
Of course there are adult issues that Silvia and Beba have to negotiate but ‘hummingbirds’ is simply that much of a pleasure. It is like being initiated into some sort of a secret society, and it is so much fun to run with them, have lots of street food, lots of tattoos, and be young. More so is the eve where the two put on unnecessary big cheap dollar store sunglasses, and mess around with a group of people playing bingo, Beba’s mom included. This is a night of bowling to celebrate Jeffrey’s birthday and new out of the blue, Silvia and Beba banish all their grown up troubles and embrace juvenile fun, if only for one day.
Silvia and Beba sought the help of more experienced filmmakers for their debut “Hummingbirds”, however that doesn’t apply for ‘Hummingbirds’. The film, on the other hand, makes for a rather refreshing view of a part of the population that many of us only hear the most sordid aspects, thanks to these Idol heads, sitting on television screens. If there is something that “Hummingbirds” is able to achieve, it has been the assertion that immigrants, in all of their enjoying and deep thinking complexity, are here and exist amongst all of our productive cycles, and more are just like us, struggling. Aron and Sonya, completing their life -i.e. They do it all with a smile.
