The first act had some good jokes and the first half was enjoyable, but the second and third are unmemorable. As a result, Seeking Dolly Parton is unfortunately one of the more lacking films within its genre. Charlie and Cerina, a female couple, desire to become parents which tends to follow the trope of a woman wanting to conceive children more traditionally. This film along with the plot device of it being a lesbian conception story covers up any lack of substance. Due to a multitude of them being simplistic, I still feel like seeking dolly parton will forever have an unsatisfying feeling for fellow viewers.
It is very much so overrepresented and cliche for a movie to contain wanting a child to stem from lesbian conception stories. Why is there such a specific subcategory of this genre? With the explanation above in mind, I can understand why one might feel Trekkies cover a far greater range of speculative fiction than what they truly do. My preconceived thoughts didn’t stop me from going into Seeking Dolly Parton. For instance, some of the jokes did tend to make me chuckle.
Undeniably, a narrative is driven by conflict. A story in which there are no mistakes, in characters or plots, sounds extremely dull, to say the least. In this regard, I could not agree with how this couple decided to pick an ex as a sperm donor. When Cerina suggests this personality as a theory, it results in a fight that unveils some flaws in their relationship. But they ignore the tension and continue with their lives. Attempts to engage with the tale are stymied, and it borders on the senseless. Even for those who do not want to resort to the anonymous sperm option, there are much more straightforward ways to conceive compared to the one Charlie and Cerina ridiculously pledge to.
Deriving from this statement gives seeking dolly parton a much stronger case than it was given. However, this movie does not follow along very well. Setting up the film is its strongest point. Some of the characters were also well executed and could deliver a punch line. You also feel that the pacing of the storytelling is very off. You hardly find any of the great comedy from the first act in the second one. Additionally, the conclusion is rather runny, and dirty and does not deliver sufficient emotional satisfaction. What’s worse is the fact that the third part starts from a rather poorly constructed scene. Cerina’s brother goes up to Josh and says that this story has no happy ending. This blatant acknowledgment of the narrative pulls Josh back into the story. After which we are treated to the emotional build up of the story which is none too different from the climax which is expected and uninteresting.
Seeking Dolly Parton definitely takes the cake for the worst cinematography I have come across so far. The amount of dialogue scenes that are filmed from a distance of a mile is ridiculous. The camera is quite literally positioned across the street from the characters. This is not how these scenes should be done. A shake-up of camera angles is most definitely needed, and don’t get me started on the close-ups. The static wide shots are a poor creative decision, or if they are a decision at all. Perhaps these were the only clean takes they got, if that is the case then something went wrong there.
While “Seeking Dolly Parton” is a decent attempt, it is far from perfect. The lack of appeal leaves a lot more to be desired, and because of that it quite literally gets an “almost passing” grade. This is the most forgettable installment of a sub-genre that I do not like at all. The movie would have had some form of merit if it got “unique” in some aspects, but the sad truth is it does not offer anything that stands out. The result is this movie being yet another bland addition to a sea of similar movies.
