When we were young kids, we all wished for great things, but as we grew older, it became more practical. For example, “Being an astronaut” twists into I want to work at NASA, then slowly shifts into “I want to be in the IT department at [insert giant corporation here.” The middle-aged principal character in Jared Barel’s The Incoherents hopes to reverse that trend and take a hopeful gamble on a second chance. The subtle film, while amusing, could have benefited from some of his audaciousness.
Bruce (Jeff Auer who is also the film’s screenwriter) was a musician in an early 1990’s rock band named The Incoherents. They were a fusion of classical and punk music and were reportedly on track to take over the world, until he quit the band to settle down, choosing family over sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll. Life now consists of a passionless marriage, a dead-end job, and brief, extravagant, and surreal recollections of past stardom (alongside asparagus) that offer glimpses into what his life could have been.
I can’t do it anymore, he says to his wife Liz (Kate Arrington). Bruce looks at Liz, who gives him the go-ahead and he puts his band back. He has Tyler, the drummer, Keith the stressed-out bassist, and barman Jimmy, who is still bitter with Bruce for breaking them up. It’s time for rock and roll made by men, he said. Middle-aged men, Jimmy remarks dryly.
To say they are off to a good start is a stretch They begin practicing in a “rat trap” studio, in front of minuscule audiences, and wandering their song orders. Comes now the incredible rock master The Jules (Vincent Lamberti), who takes the position of the band’s guide to possible glory. He does, however, meet Debbie (Margaret Anne Florence), a promoter and blogger who does something for their name or at least gives them some confidence. An indie-rock phoenix rises from the ashes to play again, she says about The Incoherents. In any case, will the older performers adjust to today’s internet-driven pop culture? And can Bruce’s marriage make it through the ordeal?
