The Lady in Red (which is also referred to as Guns, Sin and Bathtub Gin) is an American crime drama feature that premiered in 1979 and was directed by Lewis Teague, with Pamela Sue Martin and Robert Conrad playing the leading roles. This was one of the early writings of John Sayles who later on became more popular for his direction in the 1980s and 90s.

This film provides an account of a crime that took place in the 1930s about a farmer’s daughter who migrates to Chicago, gets imprisoned, engages in prostitution, falls in love with the infamous bank robber John Dillinger, witnesses his murder, and then tries her hands at a bank robbery.

Polly Franklin is a farm girl in the midwest. She witnesses a bank robbery and gets taken hostage. She is later deceived into sleeping with a sleazy journalist, Jake Lingle. Her father, who is very religious, learns about this and strikes Polly, which further causes her to runaway from home.

Polly escapes to a city where she is forced to work in a sweatshop owned by a cruel Patek, where she meets a Jewish communist, Rose Shimkus. After that, Polly becomes a taxi dancer which later leads to her arrest due to prostitution. While in prison, Polly meets Rose once again and she gets into a fight with one of the cruel guards, Tiny Alice.

Tiny Alice sends Polly to work in a brothel managed by Anna Sage where she develops a friendship with the prostitute and pianist, Pinetop. The clientele of the brothel includes the sadistic gangster Frognose, and a nicer gangster, Turk. Polly’s first sexual experience with Turk is found satisfactory. Polly befriends Eddie, a young boy, and gets him a job at the brothel. Polly is present at a shootout during a party and refuses to report Turk to the police.

In prison, Tiny Alice shanks Rose to death only to be killed in turn by other inmates. Frognose stabs Polly’s prostitute friend to death. The police shut down Anna’s brothel so she and Polly move on to working as waitresses in a diner.

Polly’s heart gets stolen by a nice man she meets in the diner. Anna Sage identifies the mysterious man as the gangster, John Dillinger. She tries to safeguard Polly by not sharing this piece of information but rather tells Melvin Purvis of the FBI with the hopes of escaping deportation.

With the tip-off provided by Anna, the FBI is on the lookout for Dillinger’s whereabouts and Polly alongside Anna attends the movies with him. The FBI kills Dillinger in cold blood as he leaves the cinema and afterward Jake publishes several articles implying that Polly is the reason for Dillinger’s downfall.

Polly opts for revenge. She calls her pals Eddie, Pinetop the piano player, and Pops, for an important undertaking. As payback for the murder of the prostitute, Pinetop murders Frognose. Then, Polly and her accomplices raid a bank. Although the robbery is successful, Eddie and Pops are slain. As a favor to Polly, Turk takes out Jake.
