The Last Stop in Yuma County
The Last Stop in Yuma County
“Thirty years ago (on a Sunday to be exact, The Last Stop in Yuma County is exactly 30 years ago), Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and the world of cinema was changed forever. The film of the year 1994 Tarantino pretzel pozhorkov. Meta-epos-crime ‘Eadweard’‘s enormous and exceeding majesty of voice shattered door after door, one after the other and exploitaciously submerged. Hence, it comes as no surprise that many films made in the 90s were little more than Tarantino wanabe’s — they were desperately violent and riotously messy underworld antics chronicling, movies that not only transformed the sordid and raunchy trends of film noir but did it with a remarkable pretentiousness, with a `Please watch what we are doing’ attitude
That attitude became part of the landscape however one could also argue that for some time as a bona fide category the Tarantino rip off went into obscurity. But “The Last Stop in Yuma County” this was the inspiration but a single unreleased time real time relatively applicable crime drama departments on a cumstaurant in sunny Arizona. How would you describe it? ‘Exercise in nostalgia about one of the genres of the microwaveable viewer rant – that one does not even remember how it came off – a tarantino knockoff. It is a slim barely reaching the hour runtimebut still thick well constructed and cleverly. B-movie film about a planned heist that unexpectedly becomes chaotic mid-heist. It’s set in a time period that is not mentioned but gives the impression of the late seventies (rotary dial telephones, Big foot for president referendum t shirt, an indefinite bored desert town atmosphere).”

Apart from the QT films may be the boldness, the boldly silly aspect that the movie towards everything it shows you does not take anything seriously. In the 40s, 50s and even the first half of the 60s, quite a few events, under 70 minutes in length called any blackboiled sleaze unsub. Tragic romances fully equipped with a deadly race against time like Greek tragedies. Then, “The Last Stop in Yuma County”, although there are sociopaths, there is nothing about love, just a couple of small time psychos sitting in a diner waiting for a gas truck to come to the gas station since the pumps are empty. It so happens that from time to time, one more guest does come to visit the diner, because they come there for gas too. The air conditioning has broken down but there is enough temperature that you can see heat waves. The place becomes a gripping atmospheric pot boiler.
Coming out of the gate as a first time writer and director, Francis Galluppi (yes the name is European, but he is from Los Angeles) impresses with the single unbroken shot which runs for not less than a minute and a half. As we hear a pulsing neo 50s music drenched in dread, a shot is framed as meticulously as an Edward Hopper painting. This is a deserted stretch of an interstate highway and to the left there is a motor lodge (the sign more or less says TEL there is only TEL) and swarming around are a few flies and a wispy cloud or two. It is expired in reserve, where all but a detailed shot of a tiny little bird that is wobbling all over one of the gas hose pumps protruding into the left lower corner of the frame is. That bird jump and just as a car is pulling at the gas pump in a cruel cruel lunge. All that was presented in the shot is in fact a choreographed sequence which could have easily been directed by a young Steven spielberg. Anything else could be termed as useless frustration, so it is innovation that governs in this kind of film.
