New film, Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black is available for streaming on Prime Video. Divorce in the Black revolves around Ana, played by Meagan Good, an image of a young banker who is married to a violent alcoholic husband, Dallas played by Cori Hardrict, who ultimately decides to end the marriage. The film does touch on a lot of very good issues including the divorce in America, but it did leave many reasons as to how on earth they managed to do a lot of things the way they did.

Well, as usual, Tyler Perry is sort of known to have rushed out the script and kept it directed towards the Christians. This one, I, however, am still working on it. Playing the role of Ana, Megan was in a marriage with Cori portraying Dallas and did a wonderful job at effectively discharging their role’s requirements.

Once again, I’d like to point out, it was quite revealing to me to see the other side of Cori, who was playing abusive husband Dallas raised in a backward family in a small American town in the South. I’m very confident that you will see both of them next in deciding roles again.

In the course of the film, fragments are continuously presented as to the reasons why Dallas became the person that he is seen today with Meagan, although the audience never fully grasps the extent of harms that Dallas has done to Megan during their relationship of over 20 years.

Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black Spoiler alert:

From the very beginning, Ava has resolved to be combative regarding her marriage. Her mother, her brother-in-laws, and even her parents are dysfunctional whereas her best friend from north is overly opinionated and blunt. No contests, it is Ava’s marriage to Dallas that matters the most. A naturally submissive woman, she is devastated whenever Dallas has “an episode break.”

To her buddy Rona (Taylor Polidore), she discloses that Dallas allows her to understand his roots more as a child which helps with comprehending why he acts in certain ways. Once again, Divorce in the Black does not for a second allow viewers a glimpse onto what kind of childhood Dallas had. Just the piece of non specific detail that the players leave.

Ava and Dallas plan to invite Jim (Shannon Wallace) and Rona for dinner one evening after work. Dallas is seen boozing alone in the kitchen and mumbling about how irritating it is that they are required to go out this evening. Ava on the other hand is excited about their night out and reassures Dallas that she will only take a few minutes to prepare. In frustration, Dallas orders her to make it fast.

Maybe not more than she agreed with him in the first place because when she steps back into the kitchen, and Dallas, by the way, looks incredible, she finds an empty chair. Dallas has left her.

Nonetheless, Ava does turn up towards the restaurant with a cheerful smile, hoping to have an enjoyable night with their dearest pals. But Dallas has turned into a drunken slur which is a complete mess as he goes about talking about the most ridiculous things and ends it with wanting to divorce Ava. In shock and unable to take the humiliation, Rona, Ava’s eloquent friend, stands up and appeals for support from her husband Jim.

This brings us to one of the most critical points in the film. The audience already knows from the title what type of events are bound to come forth, what is the central plot, but why??? What is the reason behind Dallas’s decision of wanting to divorce the lovely and beautiful Ava? Tyler Perry leaves you to think. Why do you think is the reason for the divorce?

Sad and devastated, Ava goes to her parent’s house for some respite. Her family provides the support that she needs and with the help of a childhood crush/friend who’s actually named Benji (Joseph Lee Anderson), Ava starts to piece her life back together. The life she had before Dallas and being his wife.

As Rona leaves for her parents’ house, she writes a three-page letter to Ava, detailing all the negative actions Dallas has done to her. Sadly, her mother gets hold of the letter and cries to Ava explaining how she feels guilty over having let her child suffer so much pain and sorrow. There is no doubt that there are some serious mental issues along with alcoholism in Dallas, however, they never present on the camera what it was like for Ava while she was with Dallas but only a few instances where he is having an episode and they are seen together.

So many gaps could have otherwise been used to develop his character in a better way. To better empathize with Ava. At this moment, you sympathize with Ava because Meagan does a fantastic job at making you share her pain, but you fail to understand why this is the case beyond the fact that she has tears in her eyes and is acting her heart out in a scene.

Cori somehow gives you a deranged Dallas that is clearly suffering from a lot of mental health issues and is in dire need of help but give us the juicy stuff please. Make us understand the years of agony that Ava went through and make her anguish relatable.

Perhaps Tyler had good intentions when trying to shield the Christian followers from an explosive account of a dysfunctional allegory but in the process, he also overshadowed the point of why we should hate Cori just as we hated the other cast.

All things aside and with the perspective that the script was as confusing and poorly performed as I expected, I am nonetheless glad that I tuned in for Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black and supported the cast. Both Meagan and Cori showed up and delivered and understood the assignment. As they are both freshly divorced within the past five years – Cori with Tia Mowry and Meagan with Devon Franklin, they were able to draw on their previous experiences of divorce in this character.
