Unit 234: Storage units have a lot of secrets: they are interesting, often unsettling, and stick with you for days on end. Because of the number of times they come up in Simple yet intriguing,nail biter suspense or horror films always feature a storage unit or two. A romantic comedy, which is not all about fair ladies, watching it from the audience perspective, without mystery or even trying to predict its outcome, just wouldn’t work; it would have a terrible twist, but at least it would have been entertaining. While some movies make every effort to keep the storage unit as plain as possible, Unit 234, directed by Andy Tennant, manages to maintain the audience’s interest just enough to make the location unimportant.
Laurie, Hershel’s niece who is employed as the manager of a remote storage facility but was once owned by her family, finds herself in need of a job and decides to work the night shift instead. She had to get rid of some annoying pest who kept insisting he owned a specific unit, but it didn’t prevent her from eventually discovering a fellow, in a state, inside Unit 234, which has now become the center of attention. Spartan was locked inside a gurney and had a kidney removed when Laurie was forced to flee from an aggressive group trying to seize Clayton back.
Unit 234 is a gripping thriller which transforms into an exhilarating cat and mouse game within a storage unit. The site itself has its own merits as well as frustrating drawbacks leaving Laurie with prospects of outsmarting the gang members. Luckily and quite surprisingly, not only do we get to see a rather bleak vision as to why and how Clayton ended up with a missing kidney in a body bag, as well as organ trafficking, but also the story races forward and never decelerates.
There are some breathers in the film to get a back story from Laurie, and even the so-called ‘bad guy’ performed by Don Johnson, but these more solemn episodes only provide filler for the thin plot. The tension does not let off from the moment the ‘package’ (Clayton) arrives at the storage and ends only in the last scenes when Laurie is left fighting for her survival. In a film with such a simple premise and minimally cohesive narrative, it’s actually quite novel and practical to be able to develop the characters as well as the plot in such a manner.
The only aspect that left the film hanging is the twist or the epiphany towards the final act. However, this particular twist is somewhat of a curve ball even though it is felt to have come rather late in the film.
The cast is not large in number which is not a negative in this case with only a few important roles and it is Isabelle Fuhrman in the role of Laurie that has garnered most positive praise. Not just she made it extremely plausible that never ending story turned out to be the owner of the storage space but progressively the entire narrative revolved around it. This would have also been a nice opportunity for her to showcase her action-movie skills which she did fairly well in this movie.
All in all Unit 234 is a quite a stunning concept appealing for the viewers filled with immense tension and all the thrilling elements in a roller-coaster ride. Who would have imagined watching a movie even with storage units as the backdrop is a thrilling experience?
