An undercover operative of an unnamed country (John Miljan) tries to control California while the American Civil War is happening. He enlists Morrell and his Overland Raiders to ensure that news does not travel east. The Raiders commandeer stagecoaches and rustle Pony Express horses at the various relay stations. The stagecoaches with the Raiders cut off all lines of communication to and from the east. Bill Hickok is appointed to one of the relay stations with the hopes that he will be able to prevent the Raiders from getting his ponies. Gabby and Calamity, the Indian horse traders for the relay stations, ride in with their Indian helpers just when Bill finishes off the last few raiders. Bill had sustained serious injuries during the exchange so calamity and Gabby decide to stay for some time.
In this moment, Bill’s soon-to-be wife, Louise Mason, arrives hoping to make amends after breaking off the engagement because of the side she supported in the civil war. They both agree to disregard the war life and decide to focus on marriage. Bill and Louise start making wedding plans. However, Marshal Evans, the supervisor of the communication lines, wants Bill to send a gold shipment to the East for the federal war effort which is going to need a lot of funds.
Bill understands the wariness that accompanies the gold heists and is smart enough to not fetch it himself. Instead, he hands over the gold to Calamity and Gabby. However, Louise tells Tower about his plan which sets the entire scheme in motion. Raiders end up taking Gabby hostage and successfully walk away with the gold. This makes Bill anxious because there is a possibility that he could have been attacked. He returns back to town only to find that Gabby is missing. The Marshal then interrogates Bill about the failed raid. After telling him he requires half an hour to formulate a plan, Gabby starts rallying up town to raise the alarm. He already knows that Tower manipulated the whole situation, claiming Billie was in charge of the raiders and they were escaping after a failed raid.
When Gabby claims to have seen Bill, the raiders shift their focus towards him and nab him. In order to keep him safe, Gabby sets aside their differences and frees Tower. Together, they spot the gold tower trying to steal while the raiders are distracted. Bill shouts at the Marshal to join them, and so with the decisive victory over the raiders marking the end of the Civil War, Bill marries Louise how he’s always wanted.
