Laura (Melissa Barrera) is enduring the harshest end to a relationship. Not only did her long-term boyfriend Jacob (Edmund Donovan) leave her, but he also left her while she was in the middle of cancer treatment. He simply stated that he was unable to be her caretaker and her life, leaving her a sobbing jumble with her stuff shipped over to her mom’s and, allowing her, which she helped develop! Her relentlessly supportive friend Mazie (Kayla Foster) has to come over and take her back so that she is allowed to cry. On a dark and stormy night, Laura comes across a terrifying figure whose name is simply Monster (Tommy Dewey)who has been lurking in her mother’s wardrobe and shadows in their own house and barely comes out to meet her. But, he is unhappy with Laura’s presence, and the two of them try to find common points of contact as uneasy roommates until Laura resolves to audition for Jacob’s show and together with Monster show this world that she can get things done.
The premise is beautiful, but the film constructed by Caroline Lindy as a writer and a director fails to come together completely.
Picture a musical in place of a castle in the French countryside and there you will find a heartbroken singer amidst “Your Monster”, a blend of “A Chorus Line” and “Beauty and the Beast”. The film portrays the struggles and the ruthlessness of the competitive musical theater world which stands in stark contrast to the redemptive arc of the beast, albeit failing to present an ideal figure; the ‘monster’, instead embodies a crude and discontent partner who turns passive when he finds himself next to laura. Rather, against her ex (the real monster), she was being supported by him. Things started with him being the perfect monster roommate, but the scenario took a sharp turn when he was found to be willing to fight her for control over the thermostat and TV, instantly switching into a clingy partner ordering her to pack her emotional baggage all to just to ensure that she got what she, fighting her heartbreak. Their bond on the other hand fails to be all that satisfying as the rest of its conditioning (referring to its inspiration).
As a tribute to adaptation, Lindy’s and Laura’s lives remain unaltered, taking inspiration from Laura being left at the moment when cancer still had room for hope. Giving a round of applause to ‘A Love Story’ that preaches ‘Lisa Frankenstein equally well as ‘Your Monster. That alongside ‘Your Monster’ manages to join its ranks aground rage; however, due to the resurrecting nature of rage, both take time to pacify. Let’s just say: Laura has a purpose to let it out.
It is only when Jacob humps his new mistress, Jackie (Meghann Fahy) that Laura realizes betrayal is long overdue. They are both brilliant bad girls because they have a non-conventional romantic interest. Lisa Frankenstein and Your Monster, are both able to shed off their horror movie tendencies and become good girls as all the rage so long suppressed finally begins to surface. It is more than a shame that we did not get to see much of “Your Monster” when this idea was being explored. I think it could have been more interesting.
It’s interesting to hear Barrera sing after her last playback in “In the Heights,” yet the songs contained in “Your Monster” failed to be show stoppers so she could gain her voice. Barrera, who possesses rather a narrower range than her role calls for, is rather loud and hysterical in the role of Dewey’s Monster who is on the home scene, shrieking a great deal in between tearful moments. That level of confusion regarding tone is evident in the story too. When Laura belatedly accepts her anger, she goes a little too far and gets her blood thirst under control. She seems to go to the limits of decency in her feud with an ex-boyfriend.
In this context, she is not quite looking for revenge and trying to get back into his graces until it hits her that those graces are not worth the trouble.
This is a range in which “Your Monster” is an oddity, for it can be spoiled for it has the potential to be a people’s cum but as in some scenarios it did, it exhibited the very traits which made me wish for the credits to show up. It is uneven and feels like the storyline has been too forced and plastered about the break ups and horrible exes looking for revenge but our protagonist heroine is utterly disinterested. However, while the theme is novel, the outcome is far more predictable. After Laura goes down that road, it is instinctive to assume that Jacob will play an unrepenting gaston role, disrespectfully pushing her aside for better things and in these cases pushing them is what they deserve, maybe a gorilla and these things are. “Your Monster” has flashes of brightness, but that is not enough to keep you interested for this long, and in this case, the longer the practice time.
