Mountain Boy: Within Dr. Michele Ziolkowski’s children’s book series The Boy Who Knew the Mountains comes the feel good film “Mountain Boy” produced by Nancy Paton and Meredith Brett.
Suhail an autistic boy, who lives in seclusion in the mountains, has been cut off from interaction with the outside after a certain sequence of events. Hidden treasure story has this young man as the protagonist. The only cherished possession he holds onto is the single pearl, the last possession of her deceased mother which can lead him to her mother’s family in Abu Dhabi.
Carrying with him a Loyal village saluki which he calls Barakah (Blessings), Suhail boldly trudges into the unrealized lands. Although difficult for Suhail and others to accept, the moments that he needs the most help cannot happen without various interactions with different people. Many of them seek his assistance and for each one he helps them in some ways at new skills emerge and the mastering of animal and nature is revealed to them. However, in the family of his father, but more importantly of everyone else, they allow themselves to accept.
It is directed by Zainab Shaheen and it is undoubtedly beautiful — her first ever full length feature film. As with the impressive score, managed to sneak ethnographic instruments played by the orchestra into the music created by Suad Bushnaq.
At the 2024 Seattle Children’s Film Festival, the audience’s outlook could be best described as emotional after watching Mountain Boy! There was such a reaction to the film that afterwards the director Zainab Shaheen received questions from the kids. “Oh yes all of those places were real,” she said. “I grew up in Fujairah town” …and Naser Al Messabi who plays Suhail is an autistic Emirati actor which made some changes in the filming for safety and comfortable reasons.
However, my most vivid question was whether Barakah (the dog) was really a nice dog… Yes!!! She was simply the best dog ever, ou go from watching a documentary to being presented with an amazing talent, and it was all very well done, and give it applause. Applause!
