200% Wolf
200% Wolf
This Australian animated film is a continuation of 200% Wolf and two seasons of television based on the works of the author Jane Lyons. We once more see young ‘werepoodle’ Freddy Lupin, who stands up for the pack.
Despite being accepted among his werewolf brethren, Freddy (Ilai Swindells), the poodle counterpart of his father, is unable to lead the pack due to his lesser form. In an attempt to connect with the spirits of the moon, he is whined at by a young moon spirit (Elizabeth Nabben) who allows Freddy to assume the aspects of a wolf in its truest form. This, however, makes it impossible for the young spirit to live on the moon and the responsibility of correcting the blunder lies with Freddy, Batty (Samara Weaving) and his other fellow dogs.
Rather, 200% Wolf prefers to narrate the story with little more regard to pre-school children as opposed to creating an ambition that reaches towards adult themes. The bright side of this is the target audience does not alter its relation, hence, allowing the three cast groupings (Freddy, Batty, Moonpoo and pack) to split the action at a frenzied pace. In turn, this means that the humor and the messages are somewhat more childish, but they do indeed work in favor of the intended audience.
The worldbuilding in 200% Wolf is undoubtedly its strongest side. Within the scope of two films, and two seasons, it has built up a rather child-friendly body of supernatural lore for fanta- uh, of sorts. The urban fantasy setting seems convincingly developed and is an appropriate backdrop for telling these stories.
Consequently, Freddy is best fit for the setting. His transformation into the most un-apocalyptic thing, a pink poodle, managed to give appropriate teen cockiness the needed pause. He’s a classic chosen-one protagonist, who underwent a classic low-point transformation, but it was to a pink poodle! It’s a traditional ‘growth’ narrative of the temptations of maturity, and guess what, you have to too earn the wisdom to avoid the pitfalls first.
In this, Batty has his back as well, who is a more classic competent supporting woman who is fortunately placed to the background as per the chosen one’s story mold (coughs like Hermione). Samara Weaving has to be the highlight here, bringing such amazing comedy timing to Batty, which was especially evident as she came face to face with her worst nightmare.
There is plenty in here that we’ve already seen, but it is well done and entertaining. 200% Wolf does not contradict the lore and adds a pleasant touch to the universe that fans of the series will definitely appreciate.
