Not Another Church Movie: I have been a fan of parody films for a long time, in fact, I still remember the first one I watched and as it happened, I later realized that it was one of the best films in the genre. But nothing could have prepared me for the trains wreak that is the modern day Twilights and then there’s this parody, Vampires Suck which was like a punching bag to the whole Twilight saga whereas A film like An American Carol made me reconsider how even the most trivial of Michael Moore documentaries serve as a foundation for information. And what’s more, The 41-Year-Old virgin who knocked up Sarah Marshall and felt Superbad about it was far removed from anything Judd Apatows’ recent filmography had to offer.

Now, if this flimsy family comedy, which is presumably not another church movie, piqued your interest, it’s sad indeed. This installment actually claims to go lower, deep into the abyss occupied exclusively by Tyler Perry’s worst works. For those who’ve seen Perry’s works, it’s like trying to out-offensively cliche moviemaking by being annoyingly bad. You can be forgiven if the concept of its origin is simply how awful Perry’s movies are, but this takes the cake. Perry was so over the top that nobody did kisses better than him and to doubly add to how misplaced this strength was, it was an wish I may now say useless overexaggeration to infuse religion because it made the comedy just too much.

Check this out. Former areal talk show host Hoprah Windfall, played by Luc Ashley, is about to quit all of her television businesses and begin looking for a successor. She has none other than God as her helper for this massive task, who sends an angel feather to entrepreneur and filmmaker Taylor Pherry, played by Kevin Daniels. In this case, the P is silent. Taylor comes from large family, which consists of foul-mouthed grandmother MaDude, also Daniels, and sister to horn-dog Moe played by Wayne Stamps. Somewhere in this enormous family chaos that makes it look like hiring a full-time hos of The Daily Show is a cakewalk is an assortment of family troubles, including a woman attempting to heal from a divorce of an unfaithful man, a truly dumb mover, a love-seeking lawyer, and a woman who has just been unemployed, who is also responsible for the estate of her recently deceased father.

Writer and director Johnny Mack’s primary concern is not to come up with or stick to any story, ever trying to develop even a vein of humor in any subplot, and so one is supposed to understand the mess that the film offers as a joke on Perry’s penchant for wading through excessive figures of speech. Most entertaining but probably the most audacious one is Foxx’s installed God who is seen in heaven with a ‘roundtable’ of other characters. Including James in limited scenes with the devil played by Mickey Rourke. But Mack does not care about the damn weird and presumably unique idea of the story of the film and opts for various, more compelling ones in his opinion. The abominably brutish MaDude is also ineffective because obviously she will be worth less. After all, she is a cartoon of a cartoon character. It’s like trying to copy a photocopy. Have you ever been successful?

Unfortunately, if there is anything Not Another Church Movie had potential to be, it has potential to be just as unfunny as it is. While the Perry case study wades into the depths of banality, this is likely the ordinariness that extends to nearly all his creations. It’s a tedious parody that couldn’t have arrived sooner despite the passage of close to a decade, almost like a parody of parodies in terms of placement. It appears a little too cynical to witness Perry face obscurity these days as his recent works are buried in Netflix and Amazon Prime video. So even though it still managed to get a theatrical distribution and turned over half a million at the box office, Not Another Church Movie will likely follow a similar, just deserved destiny of anonymity.

The film ‘Brutalist,’ as probably many would agree, would have suited Pansy, the main character, quite well. Pansy is neither an architect nor a person who feels well, in her old age. In Pansy’s case, the manner in which she interacts with everyone be it her family, grocery store cashiers, and furniture store sales people […]

Kyle Mooney is the one person that I feel could invoke nostalgia for the turn of the millennium and the 90’s. He has this weird outlook that blends perfectly the bright and exciting 90’s with the much darker adult side. Were those colors and commercialism a trademark of America or were they just for kids? Traditionally, ‘debutante’ balls are meant to present young ladies before the society as matured members. But in Australian comedian Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut, “The Deb,” there’s nothing even resembling “polite society.” Wilson’s character’s range from rude to outrightly offensive — none more so than the obnoxiously vulgar small-town beautician Wilson plays in crass John Waters […]
