Day of the Warrior (1996)

Day-of-the-Warrior-(1996)
Day of the Warrior (1996)

Fall is here and this month for us at the DTVC means the Hall of Fame inductions. This timing feels right since I neglected them last year, so they pushed into early 2021. Nonetheless, it was only a while ago I was saying that I had to do this and now I am proud to announce the first inductee for this year: Julie Strain. She is now the second female to be inducted into our DTVC Hall of Fame. Last but not least, this post happens to be our 1100th post which means there is no better way to celebrate than by Julie Strain and honoring her life’s work. If you want to hear more on this topic or want to know her opinion on Sidaris films, refer to the DTVC Podcast episode with Mitch from the Video Vacuum and me. We did it last year.

Time will determine this one. There are plenty of hot tub shots as well as airplane landing scenes that will give you something to watch. So the question remains, will his schegly secrets schemes work? That is still up in your air. In this one, a former agent known as Buff Bagwell has indeed broken off to form a crime syndicate and, he knows where all the undercover agents are. So he is looking to take them out one by one. That means agent Willow Black needs to let all of them know before his men can get to them. And, who then makes her join her in trying to take the warrior down.

LETHAL Ladies will always have a special place in my heart and this movie is good evidence. Julie Strain continues to do remarkable work as a heroine after Fit to Kill, and Buff Bagwell is just a cherry on top. This film includes massive elevation in CGI and effects compared to previous entries, and for Strain, who was stepping into the role of a hero for the first time, this change was smooth sailing. Along with those previously discussed, we had incredible supporting work from Ted Prior, Sidaris’s favorite Rodrigo Obregon, the always-exciting Gerald Okamura, and Julie K. Smith. Quite simply, Julie Strain will never cease to amaze you, and Buff Bagwell should really go check out Julie Strain movies, this is truly what MVD is all about fun.

There aren’t many Strain movies on the DTVC, with this being only her fourth, but I genuinely feel if there’s one person to have in the DTVC Hall of Fame it is Strain, especially when considering her remarkable track record. It’s on us to catch up and review more of her films. I believe one of the issues is our site shifted towards more action films and works, and as far as I can tell, she did not have as many action films apart from the Sidaris ones, so the rest of her movies tend to escape our attention. One of the reasons she is so impressive, especially in those LETHAL Ladies films, is that even though there is a lot of TNA and women in little to no clothing, the women have so much agency, and she was one of the best at marrying sexy with agency.

In DTV, where provocative covers could mean the difference between someone walking up to the counter or just rental, Strain made an impression just like everyone else could, but just like other LETHAL Ladies series stars like Dona Speir and Julie K. Smith, the strong women at least mainstream Hollywood has always been reticent to create are in positions where the sexy gets us in the door. You were one of the greatest, rest in peace Julie Strain. Cheers to you.

Some of you may remember ‘Strain’, but lesser known is Marcus “Buff” Bagwell, which was a very big name too. The presence is in the action movie, which proves once again how effective professional wrestlers can be. If the move was made to transfer Julie Strain from being a villain to heroine, then there is a need to place a baddie who can match her level. I looked on his IMDb, and he did the sequel to this one, LETHAL Ladies: Return to Savage Beach, and then has a couple of small parts in a film called Terror Tract and an episode of Charmed, and that’s it. Is that how it happened? He was my favorite alongside all of my buddies during Monday Night Nitro in the late 90s. After WWE purchased WCW, I see that he floated around a bit, where he did some TNA wrestling, then marked down to more local indie wrestling. But considering his age, he could do more DTV stuff. Maybe not as a driving action lead, but supporting roles? Then eventually move into bigger roles like this one? I need more Buff Bagwell.

At the DTVC, we’ve come across countless wonderful Gerald Okamura scenes but Elvis Impersonator will always be our favorite. It really doesn’t get much better than that. And he’s Elvis, so Julie Strain has to be in the red gown lounge chair cracking up as he sings, which makes it even more hilarious. I would say that, for Las Vegas casino scenes, it is probably second only to Mick Fleetwood taking one between the eyes from Robert Patrick in Zero Tolerance. If I knew there was going to be Gerald Okamura as an Elvis impersonator every time I went to Vegas, I would probably move there.

To find out how to do so, I usually outline my steps in detail in the final paragraph of my articles. However, this time, I would like to address the problem of how streaming services remove great titles from the catalog. As the platform seems to be selective on what films or series to keep in their library, I was able to find all eleven LETHAL Ladies’ films on Tubi last year. I was in shock when I found out that they did not show up when I was looking for them in the images section while writing the review. To add to my shock, I learned that the only way to watch these videos on Prime was by subscribing to the Full Moon channel. How does this work? Fortunately, someone has uploaded them to YouTube, but the quality isn’t great. Yes, I’m aware that it’s a harsh comparison to make, but Full Moon removing these videos from Tubi is terrible. They are outstanding and can be enjoyed by everyone. If not us, then please do this for the children.

And with that, let’s bring this to an end. In my opinion, this is one of the most enjoyable of the LETHAL Ladies films although you cannot go wrong with any of them. In particular, recently inducted Hall of Fame member Julie Strain has an excellent performance. If you have not set your eyes on this, do make a point to find it on YouTube, and let us all pray that Full Moon brings these back to Tubi very soon.
