Gung Ho!’: The Story of Carlson’s Makin Island Raiders (1943)

In July 1942, the Tao of America was irrevocably changed with the jarring attack on Pearl Harbor. One of the major repercussions was the active recruitment of civilians to combat the US enemy, Japan, where they retained ownership of many islands on the Pacific coast. As a result, elite battalions were formed such as the 2nd Marine Raider, whose main focus was to disrupt the Japanese Islands. “Thorwald” the head commander of the battalion, personally believed that each trooper needed to be well-versed and multi-talented when it came to combat, so he diligently and meticulously made sure that each one was training with the best imagination-exercising methods available.

Scott starred in Gung Ho!: The Story of Carlson’s Makin Island Raiders which is a 1943 American war movie documented by Ray Enright, where he portrays Carlson in the title role. The plot follows the island battle during the Second World War and is based on real-life events that were set in stone during Scott’s lifetime.

Lieutenant C.J. Cristoforos reports that the United States Marine Corps requires volunteers for a suicide mission and special units. Among the volunteers is a mountain man who has proudly claimed that he has already committed murder. In fact, other volunteers also include Harbison, a minister who when willingly called to serve, wishes to undo the most dangerous assignments because that is where he would be needed the most; ‘Pig Iron’ a boxer child raised in stark poverty; Frankie Montana (Brooklyn) who overcomes Cristoforos’ rejection because he hates being dismissed as a ‘no-good kid’ battling half-brothers Larry O’Ryan and Kurth Richter a Filipino former soldier who’ll teach Raider how to knife fight so he can avenge his sister taken by the Japanese in Manila a bitter Marine whose brother died at Pearl Harbor a former fighter against Anti-Fascism in Spain and Greece; and one Marine whose admission was that, “I just don’t like Japs”.

Sgt. ‘Transport’ Anderof meets the unit commander, Lt. Col. Thorwald, who he served in China. Thorwald elaborated that he left the Marines because he wanted to know more about the Chinese communist and Eighth Route Army that fought the Japanese in the Second Sino-Japanese War and it was pertinent to evaluate why they were there. After that, Thorwald was of the opinion that a unit was to be formed with him and the Gung Ho or “work together” qualities.

The surviving trainees are sent to Hawaii for more jungle warfare training and are there as spectators to the damage caused by the attack on Pearl Harbor. From there, they hear a bulletin from the radio concerning the Battle of Guadalcanal raging. In the furtherance of the mission, the Marines are to embark on two submarines for a commando raid on the Japanese-occupied island.

The Raiders go ashore first, followed by the rest of the Marines after the submarine ramps open. After everything was set, everyone was greeted by automatic gunfire from Japanese concealed in palm trees. The Marines, after disposing of the junior enemies of the Japanese HQ, slaughtered the garrison and then proceeded to blast the installations with explosives and finally boarded the submarines for home.
