This was not signposted in any of the film’s marketing activities, but Agent Recon is actually the concluding part of a trilogy which started with Agent Intelligence in 2017 and continued with Agent Revelation in 2021. The lost of memory can be explicated as it is because I forgot the first film until I noticed the episodes from the second installment; it was not indeed a remarkable movie. The second bore some lasting repercussions, but that is only because it was a complete disaster.

A brief voiceover featuring Jim Yung, played by writer/director/star Derek Ting, offers anyone who hasn’t seen them a basic understanding of the plot involving evil aliens called Kinians, NK – a top secret organisation solely focused on combating them and a mysterious red powder which can either enslave the aliens or grant superhuman abilities depending on the circumstances and requirements of the plot.

Agents Recon is first established during a raid that went south which resulted in the demise of Yung’s mentor named Alastair, who is a character played by Michael Dorn in the previous film, a techno billionaire in the sense of how he views himself, Elon Musk. Since Alastair had been participating in experiments much like Musk’s, Neurolink, it was revealed that his consciousness had been uploaded into the cloud and then later implanted into an android body that resembles Chuck Norris (Hero and the Terror, Missing in Action).

They team up with Colonel Green (Marc Singer; The Beastmaster, High Desert Kill) and his men, Harden (Yarett Harper; Manifest Evil, The Art of Fighting) and Miller (Jason Scott Jenkins; Jackals, Murder Syndicate), who are looking for a missing unit, the one that was under Captain Lila Rupert (Nikki Leigh; The Sand, Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch) who you will see only in this film who is later revealed to be Green’s daughter. She is held captive by Dr. Penn (Christopher Showerman; Waking Karma, Scooby-Doo! and the Beach Beastie) who wishes to use the alien’s abilities for himself.

Agent Revelation may have been an awful movie but at least its production supported the idea of a science fiction film with decent makeup and dexterous devices. Agent Recon however could easily have been an action movie with its main character running through the woods or what appears to be an airsoft battleground for most of the film trying to fight about five masked stuntmen or a man in leather with a hood who appears to be the leader.

If the purpose of watching Agent Recon is for Norris, the beginnings might be disappointing as he is seldom seen onscreen and is more inclined to stay resting on a table saying dialogues such as “You weren’t chosen, you were called upon.” Interestingly, he however appears towards the end when the showdown occurs, where he pays an homage to Invasion USA and Jesse Ventura’s mini canon scene from Predator.

He also has the opportunity to dish out a few punches and kicks, and though he is in relatively good shape for an octogenarian, the acknowledgement is made that the camera and stunt team have their work cut out for them. However, that is not as worse as the use of camera techniques to exaggerate the speed of the villain who is portrayed at certain times almost as a ridiculously fast running character. In this respect, Marc Singer spends most of his time growling and shooting at people, with the exception of a few occasions when he was on screen for more time than Norris but only stands out for the rough look he had, akin to a man who has just toppled off a drunken spree after the last Beastmaster sequel.

After watching the previous two films, to be honest, I did not set my hopes high for Agent Recon, though it was quite encouraging to see that something that had the potential to be written well and had a cast budget. It is.. How should I put it together, soulless and with an ending that logically requires the main characters to beat the speed of a nuclear explosion, but I did not particularly see it as fun.

Home invasion movies have become quite common now as a number of them have been released including The Strangers: Chapter One and Abigail released this year alone.
