Ambushed (2013)

In the bustling heart of Los Angeles, Agent Maxwell hunts down a global cocaine smuggling ring led by the infamous Vincent Camastra. When agent Beverly Royce goes undercover, things spiral out of control which complicates Maxwell’s mission as he tries to take down these criminals, murderers, and corrupt cops.

Most of the original members from Blood of Redemption returns for Ambushed, or Hard Rush. I have to say I like this arrangement as it gives Dolph a chance to show how versatile he actually is.

This film isn’t purely an action flick. It could be labeled as a gangster/crime film. This might turn some people away as the action is limited. Apart from a few fight scenes, there is a major fight between Dolph and Randy Couture at the end. Everything else is pretty dull.

It should be refreshed in memory that Dolph, Randy, and Vinnie Jones are actors in this film, but their roles are limited as the lead characters are portrayed by Daniel Bonjour and Gianni Capaldi. Capaldi seems to overshadow everyone else in the film simply because he is a fellow Scot. It’s also very gratifying for me to watch him in this movie, where he is somewhat of a psycho, and you have to admit, he plays the role quite well.

It’s like the kind of tale in which nobody is entirely good or completely evil, everyone makes decisions and some of those decisions are better than others. I found the camaraderie between Frank and Eddie interesting on the level that adds more complexity to their characters than you would expect.

Randy Couture is truly vile in this particular film, portraying a despicable cop who seeks to forcibly enter Frank and Eddie’s territory but is in for a shock when they refuse to comply. In the last twenty minutes, he totally loses composure and goes on more or less an unsettling killing rampage.

Vinnie Jones only features in roughly 2 or 3 scenes and does not play a significant part. He does not even make an appearance at the end of the film so his character there is a bit pointless.

The action depicts the drama more impressively than one would expect, and I firmly assert that lower budget does not equate a lower quality. To my pleasure those satisfying elements fused together in a blood soaked tragic ending.

We shall watch his career with great interest but for now, Director Georgio Serafini creates a linear tale with engaging characters which we can appreciate.

With that said, however, I must note that unlike what many viewers might expect, Ambushed is more of a crime story than an action film. For my part, I was positively surprised, and I must say that both Dolph and Randy excelled in their performance.
