An Army of Women
An Army of Women
As suggested by the title of the documentary “An Army of Women”, this film follows some women living in Austin, Texas who come together to protest the Minneapolis city’s failure to prosecute rape. They take the law into their own hands and sue the police for negligence which means they set a new standard for court cases involving rape in the future.
That is a worthy goal, and in fact, Julie Lunde Lillesæter’s movie brings more than interesting people. One’s looking in amazement as each woman (Hanna, Amy, and Marina), sits forward into the frame, somewhat tears on the eye recalls her own story – another story about a rapist walking free because there was no action by the law. What is remarkable, though, is not only that these women have survived such an agonisingly protracted legal process or many other failures of justice; that they continue to try, safe in the knowledge that they are about to endure further great suffering.
I think that this film brings some different aspects as others from this kind do, but I welcome any opportunity to see women showing determination when fighting for something instead of being feeble or sad. It is quite disturbing when you think that a single federal class action suit has at least signed up nearly a dozen other women who have ever assaulted claims deceased due to the fact that men commit the majority of crime against women. However, what truly alarmed me most were the two statistics given during this documentary: 1) 1 in 5 American females has been sexually assaulted in their lifetime but approximately 99% of these are unpunished, and; 2) so many girls get damaged by systems claiming to be for them – and why would any one trust one more?
In order to prove that she trusts her characters do accomplish even more than what Everest offers, Lillesæter connects everything from numbers game theory (“An Army of Women”) to speaking the truth by refusing to be quiet (“rousing”) with optimism. But still these words only scratch the surface when it comes to the appreciation of the amount of work effort that went into making ‘An Army of Women’ because this is just the first step in a series of efforts made by certain individuals who wanted change more than any other thing.
