Candy is the one movie on this New Year’s Eve that I did not enjoy as much. Let us start off by saying that this was bad. But, I’ve got to point out the homage to Trick ‘R Treat, and how I remember this from the 2007 film, and how this stands out on its own. As for the series, it is an interesting one. But, it also feels like a carbon copy of the Halloween anthologies, so I’m not sure if that is a good or bad thing. Heaven of Horror claims that one is bound to come across complex themes in this movie, and I cannot disagree with them, but somehow feels super generic at the same time.
This is Precious’s prediction for the year that we’ve crossed into looking after upgrading the gadgets, it is best avoided. So large was their scope that I instinctively find myself not looking forward to watching the film again. However, the minute details in his acting do reflect that he has more talent to tap into if he works hard at it.
That said, not everything has to be eye candy. To start with the obvious, the stories woven together into this anthology are absurd. The entire movie is just an assemblage of characters and aspects from other great horror films. It pains me to report that this film was best suited with the title Trick ‘r Treat in order to spark interest due to being satirical in nature, instead of creativity or originality. Inspiring disappointment is my main goal for this particular piece, and I do not believe I need to try so hard almost anyone will get bored watching this gem.
For Halloween horror anthologies, I’d pick the 2015 movie Tales of Halloween instead of what I have already seen. One of the stories includes Gracie Gillam, who I remember from the Superhost recently released on Shudder. That particular horror movie alone makes her more than enough reason to check it out.
Sure, I know Bad Candy features Corey Taylor, but it makes no difference to me. As far as I am concerned, he is good as the radio storyteller, which we see him do. But when the stories are not good, it does not matter much with exceptions of course.
Zach Galligan, the star of the Gremlins movies, is in fact a producer of the said radio show, but he is practically unrecognizable. But somehow I figured it was him when I heard his voice. And also, it does not work with a few familiar names and faces that are not easy to recognize if the stories do not work.
Bad Candy was co-directed by Scott B. Hansen and Desiree Connell, who were also responsible for the screenplay. Also, Thacker Hoffman is credited for having written the short story it’s based on. This is the feature film debut of Desiree Connell as a writer and director. She had worked more in production before.
Scott B. Hansen directed and co-wrote the horror film The Possession Experiment which was released in 2016. While that score is somewhat severe, it is understandable considering the quality of his most recent movie. Read more about The Possession Experiment and watch the trailer here.
I was highly anticipating a new Halloween horror anthology, so I was sad to discover that this did not appeal to me. Perhaps, if they had fully committed to camp and the low budget insanity, I might have enjoyed it more. As things stand now, I did not come out having enjoyed it, even if a few of the short stories were better than the others.
