CULT GIRLS (2019)

CULT GIRLS (2019)

What’s up everyone, it’s Valkor. In my world of film, the most important requirement to get on my good list is that I have to be engaged with the film. It does not matter what the genre is. If attention is captured, then you’re all set. For example, I did a review a few years back regarding the film Evidence. Although that film didn’t have much going for it, I remember the ending was rocking. For that reason alone, I recommend looking for that movie. What is next on the TOV list is called Cult Girls. Unlike Evidence, Ealgos does not have an outrageous ending. Nevertheless, we do get to something that is suspenseful. And as in all my posts, spoilers ahead.

Cult Girls follows Dalia (Saara Lamberg), a young woman raised in a cult known as the Golden Path. She is also referred to as the chosen one. More on that later. Thanks to a raid conducted by an unknown faction, Dalia’s life, as well as that of the cult, is turned upside down. During the chaos, a cult member tries to assist her and some of her sisters escape. Dalia is the only one who manages to flee. Later in the story, we see an older Dalia determined to discover what happened to two of her sisters after they separated. This brings her to Sam (Dean Kirkright), who becomes interested in Dalia because of her tattoo associated with The Golden Path cult. He knows where to find the cult leader, Moloch (Albert Goikham), who has the answers Dalia desperately seeks. To her surprise, Moloch explains how both sisters managed to escape. However, one sister didn’t survive. Ultimately, this culminates with Dalia becoming the newest cult mistress, taking the place of the previous one who died shortly after the compound raid.

Cult Girls releases just as spooky season is upon us. And while you might have your pick of classic horror like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, or even Halloween, why not try something different like Cult Girls? It may not be the scariest film you’ll ever watch, but it is surely worth the time. And I will tell you why in the TOV Breakdown.

It took me a while to get into Cult Girls because it was jumping back and forth in time with loose seams. One moment you were witnessing Dalia’s past and then all of a sudden you were back to the present day and I was left wondering how we even got from one point to the other. But once we got into the meat of the story, that’s when things started to get interesting and Cult Girls started grabbing my attention. There is an interesting story with a bunch of themes in the film such as paganism and eroticism. Plus, it has an almost 70s-style feel to it. There isn’t much action to be found, but the imagery is definitely chilling. A prime example is the masks on the henchmen that even creep me out after watching the film. I thought the acting, overall, was pretty decent. But the biggest standout would have to be Moloch, played by Albert Goikham. Amazing! He did in fact give me the chills the moment he stepped into the picture. In the end, Cult Girls may have been produced on the low but won me over.

For me, the film has a rather difficult introduction. I’ll admit it doesn’t make me consider switching it off but it’s still somewhat debatable. As I mentioned before, it’s more of the bouncing around with time that makes it mid-effective. At least for me, not so much at the beginning.

Cult Girls can now be found on streaming platforms like Tubi or Amazon Prime Video (Tubi is better in this case). What a fun movie! It does a great job telling this dark and alienating story which I think has the potential to be a cult classic. Definitely worth checking out. And out of TOV 5 stars, I’m going with 4 stars for Cult Girls.
