Despicable Me

‘Despicable Me’ begins with acceptance of the fact, that there is always something fascinating about villains and that is what motivates the portrayal of a character called Gru who, for example, comes to Starbucks and freeze-drys everybody in the queue and bursts the balloons in the hands of the kids. Many a James Bond villain inspires him even as he has two distinguishing features: (1) Unlike the most mad scientists lairs that are found in the deserts or the moon, this particular one was found in the basement of an ordinary house in the suburbs, and (2) instead of envisioning a world takeover, all he truly wants is to outdo in Television ratings as the most malodorous character ever.

Carell gives voice to the character Gru in a blend of two extremes: one of a Russian mafia and a Nazi. There are some hurdles as well since his mother voiced by Julie Andrews sometimes irritates him. Picture Rupert Pupkin in his basement, dreaming dreamy dreams till his mother snaps him back to reality. The Insta-Freeze Gun is Gru’s most valuable instrument, but now‚ thanks to Nefario’s innovative ideas, he also possesses a Shrink Ray.

As global-scale villainy is looking easier than he thought it is, Gru is played by his greatest cliché adversary Vector (Jason Segel) who pulls off a heist of the Great Pyramid first. There should be no CGI illusion around it. That pyramid has already been trashed before by the Transformers.

Every time, the focus of his cheering army, called the Minions, little yellow ball with one or two eyes, are attacked by the Minions towards Gru. Despicable Me Cheerleading for Gru is primary business for Minions and while they are addressed that way, it’s as though Gru’s conducting a political campaign. He comes up with an idea and this progress in the high rise, will not get him any less than the moon with the Shrink Ray, and completes the task and describes it to the Minions in a fashion very similar to the guy in the joke who has got a nurtured bush in the tree and intends to get him down using only a broomstick, a pair of handcuffs and a savage dalmatian.

It is certainly bold choice to transform the antagonist into the protagonist of an animated comedy, but the filmmakers make it up by introducing three adorable children. Thus get in Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Elsie Fisher). Gru discovers them at the local orphanage which is run by the shady Miss Hattie (Kristen Wiig). Filming ‘why’ of the boneheaded action is, of course, accomplished by restraining and/or disguising them at home with the apparent intention of joining them for a ‘vacation’ once the moon plan is ready to be executed and cannot be stopped, as for example, using them as spies to get into Vector’s house under the pretense of selling cookies. As the day follows the night, there is little doubt these orphans masquerading as little girls will use their tricks to get to Gru who in due course will just have to admit cringing that he possesses a heart somewhere underneath all that blubber.

‘Despicable Me’ has no such luggage that is able to bring it sabotaging its end, but it can possibly create one. I just don’t see how stealing the moon is going to be the most outlandish thing that Gru can possibly conceive, but there probably is an elaborate plan on what is going to be made outcraftthen haunted by Dr Nefario as I speak. The movie is humorous, full of activities, has moments of skull-cracking sarcasm and relentlessy pollution by animation looking forward to the 3-D technology while opening the curtains to mow-a-land.

The almost painful thing, I have to say, is that such 3D technologies create an image darker than it should be. There is nothing surprising in the technical performance of the ‘Despicable Me’ film, for very few would even consider it to be another visual horror like the Last Air Bender. I will however, advise you, attempt to view it in two dimensions. Alternatively, if you have to watch it in three dimensions, see the online movie trailers in two dimensions instead and enjoy how beautiful the movie would be.
