Fast Company (1979)

As an esteemed drag racer, Lonnie “Lucky Man” Johnson is busy modifying his Fast Company-sponsored car at a racetrack. During the first car test-tap run, the engine blew off, but fortunately, Lonnie was untouched. This incident did not amuse the FastCo team administrator Phil Adamson, who told the chief mechanic Elder that the company doesn’t have enough money to afford such incidents. In the lot of ‘Pro Funny Cars’, the top cool hand Gary ‘The Blacksmith’ Black is almost beaten by Lonnie’s student Billy ‘The Kid’ Brooker.

At Big Sky, Adamson gets a backhand from the organizer and explains that the fans always come for Lonnie, but while the dragster is in repair, I will replace Billy in the Funny Car. At first, Lonnie is opposed. Even worse, Billy expects this from his teacher, who one more time gives off excuses as to why he did such a low turn. During his first Funny Car run, Lonnie gets beaten by Black and the circumstances of the switch and his loss make black even more furious.

While heading to a race in Spokane, Lonnie called the dragster mechanic with some thoughts on the car but the mechanic informed him that Adamson had canceled the repair work. At the meet, Lonnie criticizes the advertisement done on his FastCo TV spot. Adamson is furious and calls the company to say that he is excited to bring in Gary Black. Despite the circumstances, Candy, the FastCo ad girl, will not sleep with the TV journalist for damage control, which gets her dismissed by Adamson. FastCo’s former driver was issued black with the job.

Billy was seen having sex with Candy inside Lonnie’s trailer. Sammy, Lonnie’s head girlfriend, walks in and to her shock, first assumes it is Lonnie in bed with her. Now Lonnie and Sammy start to throw Billy and Candy out of the house and they have sex. Numerous topics such as Lonnie quitting racing were discussed. Unfortunately, uncontrollably, Adamson walked in without any promise, leading Lonnie to knock him to the ground. Adamson replied saying that they were done, however, Lonnie insisted that he would drive the car. Lonnie’s former mechanic, Adam, appointed Black and his new car mech, Meatball.

While they are conducting yet another trial, the Funny Car’s engine bursts, but Lonnie brings the situation under control by utilizing the cockpit safety features. Billy accuses Black of sabotage. Though, Lonnie comes to Black’s aid. In the pit, Adamson declares that Black is now the designated Fast Co-driver, and the entire team is put on notice. As Lonnie lunges toward him, Meatball bludgeons him over the head and puts him down with a tire iron.

Even though Billy is distraught, Lonnie claims that they will still make it to Edmonton next weekend, and intends on stealing the vehicle. Billy and P.J. can’t believe their eyes when they spot the automobile on display at the local auto exhibition that Adamson has attended. That evening, while Lonnie rejoices over the restoration of the vehicle, Billy and Candy set off a few explosions of their own. To get the vehicle ready for the race, Billy, P.J., and Lonnie put in some extra shifts in the shop.

Twenty minutes ago, at the Edmonton circuit, the unfriendly entry of Lonnie came as a shock. Adamson fears the worst and thinks Black will lose, but Meatball confirms that as long as he rides on the left lane, he will win. With overwhelming joy, Lonnie offers the steering wheel to Billy during the race.

At the toss-up for the lane choice, Billy chooses left and winds up winning. Just as this happens, Adamson makes sure to create a last-minute shift to Billy’s frustration which seems clear. Billy gets oil poured on his lane by Meatball. As the race begins, Billy takes off blazing, but Black tries to sideswipe him. After Black gains the lead, he goes into Billy’s lane and power slides into the oil, resulting in his vehicle bursting into flames. Billy lashes out against Meatball at the edge of the track and in the scuffle, Meatball ends up igniting into flames. To save his life, Billy douses Meatball with his cockpit fire extinguisher.

In a panic, Adamson runs off to his plane. As he is taking off on the runway, Lonnie leaps into his Funny Car. With the plane’s speed increasing, he manages to cross the end of the wing, causing Adamson to wrestle with the jet’s levers. The jet makes a plunge dive directly toward a stationary oil truck from FastCo, setting off an enormous explosion during the impact.

The morning after, the team members talk about what needs to be focused on the next. Lonnie ensures that very soon there will be new finances, but priorities need to be shared between him and Sammy first.
