From Russia with Lev
From Russia with Lev
Those who have been following American politics closely for the past five years are most likely familiar with Lev Parnas by now. However, for those with a similar level of information as mine, details regarding him and his activities related to this election seem somewhat scattered and undefined. In that regard, the new documentary film produced by director Billy Corben, known for COCAINE COWBOYS, and the MSNBC host Rachel Maddow is useful. The film extends a reasonably detailed account of the man’s actions in his own words and Parnas’s of course voice is very prominent throughout the film. It is even titled, FROM RUSSIA WITH LEV.
Lev Parnas is not a stranger in American politics as he’s involved with corrupt activities at age 12. Parnas is a Ukrainian-American who ran mafia errands in Brighton Beach in Brooklyn when he was 12 years old. Once he grew older, he was involved in many other illegal acts all over the USA but was never incarcerated. He got linked to the MAGA movement in 2019 through his associates; one of them being a person he won’t name. (so unexpected!) Then Parnas got linked with US politician Rudy Giuliani for the purpose of finding dirt on Joe Biden’s son because he’s on the governance board of a Ukrainian energy company Burisma. Trump hated the thought of confronting Biden at the voting poles and thought a character rescue of Biden would help have Bernie Sanders be the leading Democratic candidate.
In their desperate attempts, Parnas and Fruman absorbed no negative information about the Bidens so they fabricated it. When the US ambassador to Ukraine who was Marie Yovanovitch insulted their attempts, they advised Trump to ‘get rid of her,’ and he complied.
Impressively, Biden went through to win both the primaries and the general election, however, that was not just the end of Parnas’ saga, it began further. He was later on prosecuted and convicted of campaign finance violations, wire fraud, and making a false statement crime that led to a 20 month jail term. On the other hand, Hunter Biden’s life was thrown into chaos and is now awaiting sentencing for a federal firearm offense and tax evasion. Although Giuliani is dealing with numerous financial issues as a result of his fake statements about two Georgia poll refugees, he has not yet been arrested for anything in connection with his partnership with Parnas. The Teflon Don, however, you know doesn’t get anything attached.
In FROM RUSSIA WITH LEV, Parnas walks through the timeline of his participation in this plot step by step, including photos and voice recordings. The man tapes everything! I’m quite impressed that someone hasn’t taken him out, but I suppose it is too late since he has released all the evidence. Although Giuliani is still on the streets today and is still lying through his teeth about Burisma, I have every confidence that the Justice Department will charge him with newer offenses after the 2024 elections.
For me, the most fascinating part of the video is how Parnas is fully committed to the narrative and puts his heart on the screen. I would dare say that he is rather a victim, someone who attempted to defy the odds but is now suffering the repercussions of his actions. Corben and Maddow hit a jackpot in their instance where Parnas would later say that he would like to apologize to Hunter Biden but in person and through the media. As Maddow has voiced in promos, they believed Biden would refuse it. Parnas, being the cut throat businessman he is, made it possible and we see that scene in the film. It is indeed hard to watch this segment and not feel any kind of sympathy for Obama since he does hold himself with poise and composure. He does his work head on and his father brought him up in a superb manner.
FROM RUSSIA WITH LEV, the current one, can be watched ONLY on NBC.com. I think it will soon migrate to Peacock and afterward to the other streaming services. If you have the opportunity, do not pass it, as it is quite engaging.
