HOUSE RED (2022)

HOUSE-RED-(2022)
HOUSE RED (2022)

For the film House Red, British director Coz Greenop made his first horror movie Wandering Rose in 2014. The movie saw the light of the day in 2022. Coz has also directed the horror films Dark Beacon and The Last Heist.

House Red is not an uninteresting film, to say the least, and further analysis reveals the many reasons for its defense. The movie has a good location, and beautiful sights of the vineyard, and the cast is just as stunning. The film is set in Florence which is famous for its amazing architecture. The setting of the film coupled with the cast makes for a solid film. The tension between Sam Wilkinson and Clara Paget assures that the film will keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The plethora of characters including a sexy Natasha Henstridge, who plays the wife of a MILF, and a foreman’s daughter also add excitement to the film.

Undoubtedly, this makes one question where House Red aims to move. The presence of Sean Cronin as the owner of a wine bar makes for a good introduction that gives reasonable suspense. The sexual tensions at the vineyard end up being followed, and the viewer never really knows what is happening in terms of horror. Tamer Hassan (who also produced this film) has a great scene as the foreman where he explains to Sam Wilkinson the background of the Alsatian vineyards and how parts of the Champagne region of France are constructed over where the blood of war dead has battered the soil. Which then leads to the disturbing twist ending.

In my perspective, the movies from the year 2020 and onwards have a clear bias against the male gender and as a result, I try to avoid watching movies like She Will (2021), Things Heard & Seen (2021), Hunt Club (2022), and Barbie (2023) all come to mind. Speaking of which, House Red leans even less toward the horror genre by quite a stretch, and instead focuses more so on the mental breakdown of a man named Felix (Sam Wilkinson). Felix is engaged but seems to face women coming onto him wherever he goes, though he is never portrayed to be actively flirting with any of them. This would be fine, apart from his fiancée, Natalie (Clara Paget), who refuses to leave him and instead chooses to cling to him because he is ‘her one’. He has even slept with her best friend (Debbie Campbell) who constantly texts and calls him, asking why he hasn’t broken up with Natalie. The film chooses to end by portraying this man, as a ‘cheating bastard’, as someone deserving of death.

I do not wish to delve too deeply into the sexual politics of the matter, but I would like to see a version where the sex roles are reversed. For instance, other women are constantly hitting on her and she is considered worthy of execution for having cheated on her fiancé, and the piece is not branded as sexist.
