INTERFACE (2022)

Children and parents alike often remain at the center of many forms of drama. In Kemo Diatta’s film, Interface, he ventures into the world of neglectful parents and shattered children by introducing us to Claire (Samm Wiechec) and Kaley (Makenna Perkal), two sisters trying to navigate life after the loss of their father who died in a car accident. Their mother, Michelle (Robyne Richards), is comatose and on the verge of death. To save her life, they are given a chance at a miracle with Interface, an experimental program that allows doctors to hypothetically enter the mind of an unconscious patient and revive them. So far, it has never succeeded before, but Claire has a vision from the multiverse where one of her counterparts is able to succeed in the procedure. All she has to do is figure out how to make it work in this reality.

Incorporating themes from Everything Everywhere All at Once, writers Diatta and Rebecca Norris give it a family Bergman twist. This story is a captivating science fiction thriller. The laid-back atmosphere focused on the multiverse is nice. In Claire’s world, if you have the time to figure out how to build a portal machine, not a gun, you can jump across the dimensions humanity resides in. Even more, I liked how each new reality was only vaguely different from the last one.

As the action progresses, Claire and her partner Peter (Havon Baraka) take on the hosting duties. Baraka does realistic, disheveled violence pretty well. It’s that slow, vaguely organized, dangerous stuff people do when they get into a fistfight. I liked his fight with an alternate Shadow (Christopher J. Robinson). The Shadow main reality version was done nicely too. The acting is quite strong in this film. This is how it should be because they want to not draw attention to and over-emphasize the special effects. While there aren’t many visual effects, the few that are there are great. In the first dimension, Peter and Claire go to, there is a subtle reference to Blade Runner 2049 which I loved. To understand it, you have to watch Interface, which I am not going to spoil.

With Interface, we already have a glimpse of the world-building imagination of Diatta. This is his first feature film, and it is a remarkably strong start. I appreciated the wide vision he was able to build with rather limited means. The fact that some decisions were practically bound to have a certain result was a very interesting choice that added to the world-building. This was quite good as a family drama/intrigue action multi-dimensional piece. I’m excited to see what he does next.

This is an action film with dramatic depths, as well as an introspective and brooding one with moments of adrenaline rush. If Diatta and his crew put in the hard work, I will bet there is a sci-fi action masterpiece waiting to come out. From what I see, this is a very plausible beginning to a hopeful career. If you appreciate any of the different genres the filmmaker fuses, look out for the film. It will be worthwhile streaming or finding it at an arthouse cinema. Indeed, this is an astonishingly good time.
