It Ends with Us
It Ends with Us
For Sony Pictures, if their most recent release has made over $180 million worldwide from a budget of $25 million, then making a sequel to it cannot be any easier, especially given that you already have the source material for this. However, in the case of It Ends With Us and the adaptation of its follow-up book called It Starts With Us might turn out complicated if your leading actress and producer is at odds with the person who optioned film rights.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, launching It Starts With Us will not be a simple matter should Blake Lively (lead star and producer) and Justin Baldoni (co-lead and director) continue to feud as they have since the film’s release where it received much coverage. This is because not only are Lively’s character Lily Bloom as well as Baldoni’s Ryle Kincaid featured in the sequel novel but there is also an intricate situation where Baldoni sold Colleen Hoover’s books five years back through Wayfarer Studios banner he owns. Consequently Wayfarer holds It starts with us rights too so developing a sequel in which both creators stay on board depends on them being amicable.
Baldoni doesn’t necessarily have to star in or direct It Starts With Us. In fact, he even suggested that Lively should direct the sequel throwing some shade her way possibly. To sit out on either would hardly affect Baldoni at all though because he is a member of Wayfarer Studios with billionaire Steve Sarowitz and Jamey Heath hence still involved in some capacity regarding production of a sequel. While Sony Pictures can distribute any future installments, they would find it hard maintaining key creatives with Baldoni… [to be continued]
It appears like this studio has sided with team Lively after Sony Pictures Entertainment chair-CEO Tony Vinciquerra publicly commended his working relationship with her together with other women including Hoover involved in this project. Stating “We love working with Blake and we want to do 12 more movies with her,” Vinciquerra’s statement either implies that Lively got on well with the studio or that they are taking sides based solely on business interests in supporting the bigger star. In fact, Lively has had a reasonably consistent film career, with only The Rhythm Section of 2020 performing poorly at the box office. Since Gossip Girl and after the show was over, Lively has been consistently successful in her films financially, with It Ends With Us being her biggest hit yet. Importantly, throughout his praise for It Ends With Us team, Vinciquerra did not mention Baldoni once.
As stories continue to emerge, the rift between Lively and Baldoni only gets more puzzling. Initially, it appeared like two actors didn’t agree during a press tour. However, things are not as they seemed. The controversy revolves around lively’s self-positioning in relation to curious parties who claim that advertising was too surface level considering the movie’s theme of domestic violence. As a result, the internet has been digging up any old interviews where she said something stupid or controversial. In fact, another rumor suggests that Baldoni is not an easy person to work with and it’s strange that he failed to return after 2023′s SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes when lively refused to be shot near him again because according to some stories about her shooting experiences with him ,unresolved beef had existed at least twelve months before this time. This disagreement also extended into reshoots resulting into two different cuts of the same film: a version by Baldoni and another one preferred by Lively. According to sources, theaters all over America are now presenting Lively’s cut.
By then sequel talks may have come through completely because it is show business after all and remember people will do anything for money in Hollywood . Who knows? Everybody involved in this fiasco might wake up one morning and say “hey guys we are millionaires! Why don’t we smoke our peace pipe?” Nevertheless, for now this soap opera will be played out driving box office numbers further north thus ensuring good sales both online as well as brick-and-mortar stores.
