Kaaduvetty
Kaaduvetty
In “Kaaduvetty,” director Solai Arumugam relates an interesting tale about women’s respect and their safety that people should normalize. But as the narrative unfolds, one sees the issue of respect, cutting across caste, race, and communities, making it even more combative – socially, at best.
“Kaaduvetty” is a story of inter-caste love between Dakshayini, a daughter of a folk dancer and Akilan, who belongs to a different cast. While pursuing Dakshayini, Akilan reveals the ills the rural society directly or indirectly faces because of norms. While it may appear to suggest that cities are relatively more liberal towards inter-caste marriages, we come to see later how even cities are not sheltered from such political nurtured differences and their attendant tensions.
To communicate the problem of caste and the role of love and marriage in the caste system or Manipulative relationships with women from other castes to marry; Kaaduvetty does this through intricate plots. The film brings this out through instance where some leaders and men in the community abused women by deceiving them into relationships.
The film also depicts the struggles faced by parents in today’s society as there are a lot of expectations from them which often ends tragically for some couples who go against such boundaries that are often related to caste based discrimination. While the movie targets advocating for the wellbeing of girls of the underserved such as girls from rural areas; this movie is also not limited to that but rather goes more profound into the society.
Subramaniya Siva, who played Rajamanickam within all his roles because of how real his character became in that very movie, deserves mention. Other significant portrayals were from R K Suresh who had kind-hearted characters while Aadukalam Murugadoss who performed as a father figure adding all the acting quality and others in between.
The only drawback that can attach to this picture is its silent talkies characteristics plus the story-telling depicted in the style of focusing on might be a challenge to some viewers. However, the core idea of is endeavored even if words are silent. It is this sharp reminder to us that love can prevail even in highly casteist societies that drives nationalistic passions wild…. “Kaaduvetty”.
