Oddity
Oddity
Are you a seeing double? Well, someone in Oddity, as in literally, is unable to see at all, but that wouldn’t star her from going about grabbing people’s names, seeking the truth, and a lot more. It is a crazy story that brings forth the enormous capabilities of an Irish actress Carolyn Bracken best known from the Oscar Nominated movie The Quiet Girl as well as one of twin sisters wen dies way too young, fun starts, and this would be a treat for those who like horror-thrillers around the globe.
Damian McCarthy is the one who wrote and directed the film Oddity. And the story is turned into some vengeance-karma. It may take a wee bit to long for its revenge-karmic tale to get off the gr. Even the first act may delight the viewers, by the time the last credits flicker on screen, you will be drained of all emotions and begging for more. IFC Films seems to be scooping up quite a few innovative horror projects these days, the terrific In a Violent Nature, following earlier this year. And now, Oddity is here to make you further squirm during this hot, hot, hot summer season.
The modern story begins, still, in the manner of a fairy tale, but this time, we bring in a different perspective. In fact, of all his properties, “the country house” belongs to Ted (Bohemian Rhapsody actor Gwilym Lee), and Dani (Bracken) is where the “magic” is tucked away. As though you weren’t bored by the whole premise in insulated hermeticism of a rising estate in Lars Von Trier’s movie Melancholia. The same sensation will be felt in Oddity, only much more pleasantly.
Descriptive words like vintage and also “odd” both come to mind in consuming this latest of more than or less than three IFC deserving title: ‘ADCOD’ Its dimensionality originates from a fragant and unviscerally shocking first scene where wife Dani is virtually threatened as a trespassing unobtrusive but well-meaning Olin (Tadhg Murphy) has recently been released from prison after wasted seventeen blood-stained years for murdering his own mother. But for some strange, unknown reason, he already saw danger in Dani on her own degree. And, it doesn’t help that her husband, Ted, is a nurse and works nights at the same psychiatric ward Olin had been hospitalized at for several years.
Fast forward one year into the future and Dani only exists in the memories of photographs and a voice message she had recorded for her twin sister Darcy where she claims to have discovered a method that would allow them to “connect” their souls, sadly placing this message before the knock on the door of Death. The message is again played for the hundredth time by the wistful Dani, but this time definitely not only for the sister who passed away.
One lap around the sun later, Ted has already moved on to a new lover who is younger and sultry Yana Caroline Menton who happened to be friends with Ted before the morbid death of Dani. Not surprisingly, Oddity does not hold back on the violence just that like in recent IFC films Irok which also loved gore more than anything else.
Ted obviously wishes to leave things in the past, thanks to the fact that his dead wife’s sister has a day job and runs a curio shop, even the owl from the cabinet cant be embarrassed by Guillermo del Toro. At this point, it is the death anniversary of Dani, sister Darcy and surprise of surprises pays Ted a visit at the end and even dares to spend the night at the place disappointingly even Ted has to leave for work and rather unwillingly longs for Yana with this blind and strange rising curiosity left alone.
Besides, it does not add up that Olin, a dodgy man who seriously tried to keep Dani out of danger, becomes the very person, whom people few would think of being the one to do such a horrible thing about a year ago. That’s what everyone in town thinks since Olin had murdered someone nearly two decades before. However, Olin was found dead by the end of the same night, and Darcy may or may not be a certain medium who uses her skills within Ted’s strange house.
Suspense in this novel escalates to deliberately unbearable proportions, enhanced by frightening set pieces, since—let’s not forget—Darcy owns some kind of strange-looking antique business and even carries a large souvenir when she pays a visit to Ted. Why? And why would it be necessary for that sconse to be none other than a petrifying dummy and a trove of some treasures hidden inside it? Yana is considering leaving the ship, but as usual, she cannot find the car keys, and her interest rises as she looks for answers of how things are with Darcy and why she is inside Ted’s house, which is undergoing renovations and is not in the best shape indoors.
These all insipid insignificant trinkets in conjunction with dynamite and measures conducted by its leading actors build a visually and mentally disturbing but rather elementary plot possibly suitable for several viewings. The last few moments, which are more like cliffhangers, will probably split the audience, but one would not be surprised if Oddity 2 appeared sooner rather than later.
