Have you ever been motivated enough to the point where you’d sacrifice even the most basic aspects of living like sleeping, eating, or taking a break for something? If you’ve never had to answer that question, then maybe you haven’t truly wanted something badly enough. Jokes aside, the story of One of These Days is centered around the hands on a hardbody documentary and the tragedy that occurred after it transformed from a beloved annual competition to something else entirely.

One Of These Days takes place in a Texas small town where Joan (conveniently played by Carrie Preston) puts together an annual contest for a chance to win a brand-new pickup truck. Twenty people, including Kyle (Joe Cole), a local fast food worker, were selected to compete over four days by doing anything it took to be the last one standing. However, disregarding each person’s basic needs right from the start was bound to lead to some dark outcomes.

Bastian Gunther, the Writer/Director, captures social satire in his film. Unlike most comedies, he chooses not to depict the absurdity of twenty people losing all rational thought in order to claim a piece of metal on wheels. His point of view is that of the spectators, the privileged, who have a chance to look at the tormented fools engaging in this contest. The plot is gripping and both Joan and Kyle are easy to understand as fictional characters. Joe Cole effortlessly portrays Kyle’s helpless self-esteem and vulnerability through silence.

What Gunther implies is that the growing hopelessness is clear, as if winning the truck and the hideous American side of the truck come with everything. While Joan herself is not a racer in the competition she is in the sense that the race she is in is one to improve her standard of living. When considering the structure of the film, it is quite fascinating that it begins and concludes with Kyle. It prompts an intriguing question do people or possessions take precedence?

The main thing that One Of These Days lacks is the comedic element. The characters around the truck came across as rather two-dimensional, but if they would have been given the opportunity to use humor, the film would have been more entertaining and would have made the shocking event all the more shocking.
