Not too long ago, absurd cinematic comedies were a hit in the movie industry. As a matter of fact, it used to be just about impossible to go through the weekend without laughing at some good-tier comedy that makes its audience cry out at how good the jokes are. These comedies sought to accomplish one thing entertain you. For 90 whole minutes. And indeed, a lot of iconic franchises came out of this push for hilarity. The type of comedies we still quote repeatedly, binge-watch when they are aired on television or available on streaming services, and reminisce about those funny moments that just put a smile on our faces.
Funny as it may be, what for people may have looked like a natural progression of style, nothing less could have prepared them for what came just after. Somewhere at some point in time the intense comedy genre suddenly vanished from the market. What truly is incomprehensible is the reason why. Some people believe it is due to the sudden growth of concern over whether a certain form of entertainment may be offensive, and it is believed that absurdist comedies cross way too many boundaries.
While some have suggested they cost a lot to make and sell to a studio, it is still interesting to think if we will ever be able to enjoy such comedies again. Operation Taco Gary’s, which came out at the Austin Film Festival, is a hilarious story that brings us back to that golden era of comedy. Thankfully, filmmakers are working to bring back this kind of narrative, and I can confidently say that we are going to see a lot more of it for years to come. This is why we are so motivated to put the spotlight on it because I can firmly say it is the funniest comedy of the year.
A result that this film achieves by immersing us in quite a remarkable moment for a man named Luke. Luke has gotten this astonishing job in Canada, and by the time we meet him here, he is liquidating everything to get ready for the transition and is on top of the world. He’s even more so on cloud nine when his long-lost brother Danny shows up to assist him with the move. Because he hasn’t seen Danny for so long, which is partially due to the fact that Danny likes to think of himself as a conspiracy theorist, and tends to go off-grid for long periods. But for this family get-together, Danny’s motivation is quite the opposite. Contrary to what is believed, Danny’s motivation for this reunion is so that he can spend time with his brother and subsequently send him off on this new journey. Or is it? Not long afterward, Luke finds out that Danny isn’t really what you would call honest with him, and that the reason why he has chosen to accompany him relates to one of the most incredible conspiracy theories in existence, and if Luke wants to be free from his brother’s wild ideas, then he has no choice but to undergo this journey his brother concocted.
Which is the ideal setting to unleash an unrestricted comedy without any limits. This is particularly the case since the conspiracy in question is one that allows the entire narrative to have fun and go to wildly unexpected places, which truly gives rise to some wonderfully hilarious moments. Ones that feature some truly iconic comedy sequences. These include physically hilarious gags, running gags, and of course, those super slapstick haha moments that are never-ending and just keep getting better with each fun added. Comedy enthusiasts love these classics that keep serving the laughs. It is amazing that this motion picture still manages to leave its audience in wonder despite the absurd amount of things it offers.
Because it is also, a brilliantly written film, one that makes some of what happens here, feel believable. This draws you into the story deeper, as do the stakes present for both Luke and Danny, and like any great comedy it has heart and some genuinely endearing moments as well, and it also boasts… just an amazing cast. Which is important in putting together a quality comedy. Because they have to sell the funny, and they most certainly do, with one actor leading the charge here, and he really takes this movie to the next level. Comedy legend Simon Rex plays Danny in this tale, and he brings incredible depth to the role and lets loose here as a comedian, and that really does lead to some incredible moments. In fact, this is some of Simon’s finest work here.
Equally important is the screenplay as a work of art in a remarkable film that makes some events believable. This carries you deeper into the plot alongside the stakes for Luke and Danny and like any great comedy, it has some genuinely hilarious moments and endearing moments, and heart too. It also boasts an amazing cast, which is important for putting together a quality comedy. They most certainly do, and Rex takes this movie to the next level. Simon Rex, the comedy legend, plays Danny in this tale but brings so much depth to the role, that he lets loose here as a comedian and that leads to some amazing moments. And, this is some of Simon’s finest work here.
All this culminated in an utterly brilliant comedy. A comedy which knew exactly the assignment it set out to do and demonstrated how, for this type of movie, there absolutely doesn’t need to be a huge budget and that it is possible to be funny without worrying about politically correct concerns, and it is okay to sprinkle a little story and humanity to these tales to touch the audience and bring together the refreshing and revolutionary comedy. It is the one that truly, really just brightens your day, and we want to applaud writer-director Michael Kvamme for almost single-handedly restoring this kind of feature, let’s hope it will inspire a new wave of wacky comedies for the bold visionaries of this generation. As Simon Rex so poignantly put it in a chat with The Reporter about making these films as he said we need these movies more than ever.
