Place of Bones
Place of Bones
There should be more women in the roles where Westerns are set; it shifts the viewpoint and also changes the story itself. The Netflix miniseries Godless (2017), the one which received several awards, definitely contributed to changing the trends, as well as the recent Emily Blunt miniseries The English. Quite recently, it’s interesting to witness such a famous actress as Heather Graham (Boogie Nights, The Hangover) attempting this type of film, who starred somewhere in The Last Son and then finished shooting The Gunslingers with Nicolas Cage. And now there is Place of Bones, a Western suspense film.
Place of bones is labeled as horror & thriller but in reality it is really sad that Place of Bones is unable to utilize the home invasion sub-genre the scares with home invasion much to the extent it deserves. Starring in the film is where Audrey Cummings is the writer and director where Place of Bones is noteworthy even if it follows the many Western clichés as are overwhelming. Julian McMahon is the primary antagonist, Tom Hopper, and the female-driven feel of the film is so refreshing that it encourages hating every western movie made henceforth.
In Place of Bones, Graham assumes a cool, no-nonsense and representative of a mother character and has not aged as shown by her performance 25 yr ago in Austin Powers. This is followed by different resurrections as she is an outlaw in hiding but by the time we show-n-shed she revises heroine its already a hard road. She is a widow who has no other bone place other than the grave of her husband buried Few feet away from her home in the mountains.
Sorrowful, yet peaceful, it’s a beautiful, heart-wrenching conclusion, with Pandora shifting between the domestic sphere and adolescent Hester (Brielle Robillard). Wherever she is, Graham is always lovely as always. Here, as they all do with their one and only child, in concocting all sorts of dangers that one may come across — some justification for safety as of course, this only becomes more glaring, quite a memorable Western thriller will have it.
The problem is at the hands of a seriously wounded outlaw whose name is Calhoun (Corin Nemec) as we find out later. Pandora looks wary already of the axiom that says, “death knocks at your door for you”. When Calhoun introduces himself to Pandora, or rather, falls down on the porch with a bloody leg, presumably covered with bullets, she does not quite appreciate his spontaneous visit.
Without question, Pandora has a moral center – which is another reason why we tend to love this stern mother throughout this tale – which explains why she struggles a bit to completely shove Calhoun aside when he drops by unannounced. On the contrary, she nurtures him, licks his wounds and feeds him — however, Moment of the Bones has always imposed a dominant feminine theme and it means that, as much as she respects Pandora, she will not be submissive to the man standing before her. Business as usual, as Graham depicted in his gorgeous yet dangerously emotive gaze – does she ever get older though? I wonder.
Answering him seems to be partially holding her up, but clearly aliens, the grandeur and the mess of the place has an equally driving force in her. She wants him out, and sooner rather than later because she is not so naïve as to miss Calhoun nurturing an outright shady vibe when he soon comes round but refuses to talk about how he ended up in this sorry mess. And finally, they do inform us that there happens to be a robbery going on and there happens to be a protagonist or rather a antagonist Chase Harris unfortunately turned out to be. Oh and Calhoun is also being hunted by a bank robber, Chase Harris if you please. The head honcho that is into Calhoun’s body is called Bear John played by “The Umbrella Academy” star Tom Hopper with a certain rage distance from the recent romantic hilarious movie Space Cadet.
At the very least, Hopper’s Bear John inserts violent scene where for instance a gun is fired, in place of bones, just when one fears that the audiences have come to the house of Pandora and the story seems to have come to an end. It is definitely funny to see her and Calhoun quarrel and exchange Southern-drawl obscenities, on a single occasion, but that the movie takes too long to simply get to the essence of it all. And so everyone is robbed of the chance to enjoy Tom Hopper in the impressive role of a villain.
When the battle does happen, it brings back Pandora’s fierce and active spirit and this time round, she is more than able to stand her ground. It’s one thing to enjoy watching Pandora channel her pain and sorrows into furious violent actions, but that’s the world gone clichéd ending. The picture was required to be more aggressive in the advertising violent parts, Place of Bones never reached the level of tension and creativity of the Must See Western thrillers, but it is still an adequate motion picture focusing on the life of a widow and appreciated.
