RESONANCE: DEEP WITHIN THE WOODS (2018)

Max Croes and Elena Natassia Firestone, a couple that seems to be very in romantic love, take a break from the hustle and bustle of noisy society. They take a trip to a secluded woodland. It doesn’t look like humanity exists for miles. Oh! And their cabin possesses an impeccable Wi-Fi signal. I guess you could say they are experiencing “romance” stereotypically, social media-obsessed individual style. And what seems to be a shock to me, is the fact that their cabin looks unexpectedly lovely. But a cabin in the woods, isn’t a horror story waiting to happen? It makes me wonder, is this trip going to be an uncanny horror cliche too? It turns out, that this is not going to be like Evil Dead, and it doesn’t have to be, but there is something strange about that wilderness.

While snapping photos, preparing romantic dinners (more like setting the stage for a decorous dinner), And trying not to hate each other and looking at them, who would say that they actually hate each other? And suddenly, out of the blue, something satiating awakens and strives to feed on them both. I am definite that it is pushing them too well, in all honesty not even close to the edge of sanity. Truly mattering.

As they try to take pictures, there’s no chemistry happening and all that seems to exist out there in the woods is this relentless drip drip drip noise that not only causes nose bleeds but also drives them to insanity. Whether it is industrial or from some unknown creature, it is not a good idea to hang around. But to give them credit, they do what any sane human would do but, of course, the after-effects are what they have to deal with and that is a lot of trouble.

Seeing this and keeping things in check, I was hopeful that it would offer something new and bizarre. The thought of a sound being the monster or the enemy of a film is surely captivating. Such an idea might sound absurd and difficult to put your finger on, but it is surely intriguing for a horror film.

A cold, eerie mystery wraps this film. Just like the woods where Max and Elena get lost, something is disquieting and unknown within the narrative. If the cast was stronger, the script better, and the overall direction more, this could have shifted into a supernatural piece but as it stands, this movie is mediocre. It already sets the bar very low when a movie that contains resonance as its main theme seems to muffle the voices of its actors. The dialogue that can be made out is highly cringeworthy and purposeless.

Even if a gripping tale is missing, the foundational bones appear to be present. The relationship issues between the couple are fascinatingly depicted but sorely lack attention from a good script writer. The couple’s surroundings of infinite woodlands and the profound seclusion they have to deal with are equally set up well. That being said, in this integrated world we live in, beautiful imagery can be taken for granted due to the presence of modern-day cameras. First and foremost, the characters and the plot ought to be compelling enough to capture one’s attention for 90 minutes and unfortunately, Resonance does not fulfill that at all. As such, spending 90 minutes with the couple feels far more like a tedious chore that extends for many unwanted hours. There is something phenomenal within the film but like the woods, it is completely unexposed and for far too long to mask how little there is to it. Ultimately, nothing truly happens.

Though the pacing is dull and the dialogue rather underwhelming, there is a sliver of potential that emerges from Max Croes, who might turn out to be a very intriguing actor. Notably, his look combined with his being attentive, especially when the film suddenly has action, makes watching him worth it. The catch, however, is that he is plagued by dull remarks with the only other character in the piece, which for some reason takes forever to actually go anywhere.

The film had potential as a mystery drama, but it lacked substance and energy. Just noise alone is not terrifying, that much was clear, yet something was missing to provide closure. It’s hard to believe, but a movie with Sonic The Hedgehog’s sound mix laid in could be considered dull. Sure, it did not need any captivating visuals to explain the sounds, but marvelous storytelling was definitely required to make every moment of watching it worthwhile. Its inability to provide energy makes comparison with novels much easier, especially those boring ones like Honeymoon, Resolution, and The Endless. There is always an imbalance between psycho-eldritch horror and a resemblance of interesting characters, making such flicks highly entertaining, but never forgettable at the same time.

Resonance is a completely different thing. Too boring to be classified as one of the ‘sinister noise’ films, too outright to make the audience laugh at it, it falters quite dramatically.
