Ricky Stanicky
Ricky Stanicky
Ricky Stanicky: Quite some time ago, and before Judd Apatow pretty much monopolized on infantile male-centered films, there still existed someone like Peter Farrelly, who with Bobby could make seine films that would, well, have a funny, if a little extreme and rude, film ‘Dumb and Dumber’ or ‘There, am Mary, but What am I?’, and what can one call the crass experiment that was his solo attempt in ‘Movie 43.’
I also know that Farrelly wanted reasonable changes to stylized comedies which include winners like “Green Book”. He’s gone back to the familiar bland ‘guy’ comedies of earlier years – Ricky Stanicky.
Slasher Ricky Stanicky is one hell of a poor man’s Spinal Tap. And yes, its quite incomprehensible in almost all comics to say these words in a serious manner. It’s more like simply rehashing the same unnecessary bits, jokes around which without anything important or even smart and/ or clever waiting for it has been built or spun.
Yes, Farrelly has five co-writing credits on the screenplay as well as two other co-writers with a story by credit on the front and back cover so it is pretty hard to allocate blame of any such ‘screw up’ imagining, “where have they all gone?” that all.
As the movie starts, Ricky Stanicky in fact, is not the film’s title character. Rather he is created as an imaginary fall guy out of necessity by three young boys in order to avoid blame after one of them has a “poop in a bag, put a lighter in it and light the bag on fire” idea that doesn’t exactly go to plan.
Over several years, and looking at the cartoon credits, the three rely on Ricky to be the scapegoat for any variety of mischief and poor judgment. Even after growing up, Dean (Zac Efron), JT (Andrew Santino) and Wes (Jermaine Fowler) still use Ricky as an excuse to abandon their families – which is really just a ruse to have an adventure, probably going to a game or some concert.
Since both Dean and Wes were unhappy in marriage, they ignore some lady’s wish to skate and bring their little daughter from daycare “to prevent her suffering.” When the trio has had too many covert escapes, family and friends have no choice but to meet the notorious ex con, sexist, hanger on named Ricky Stanicky.
To satisfy their wedging conscience, the male maid parents decide to hire some faded, drunken, washed up actor called Rod Johnson (John Cena) to play at some family event where they have invited everyone. Or at least, it creeps in occasionally with asthmatic wheezy wheezes between funny insults about feminists and other forms of racial bigotry.
A good portion of “Ricky Stanicky,” is childish and depressing, relying on protracted gags, low grade masturbation milks and a mixed bag of ‘comedy cringes.’ Even William H Macy gets to feature as Dean and JT’s corporate boss who can only manage to make obscene gestures during corporate meetings such as the ‘Cawing Hummer’ with the utmost naivety.
During these flashes Jeff Ross plays the role of a funny rabbi, who does a bit of ketamine and therefore, can’t perform the bris he has come to do. The director of “Green Book” decided to make the only black character onscreen, who’s Wes, an african weedhead while the other boneheads dean and JT pretends to be working class. I’m sure it has its favorable attention, but I’m not one of those people.
Fair enough, Efron and ‘crazy’ Cena in this case do just what their namesake has made for them. In particular, Efron scores as all action hero ‘Dean’ constant on the cross road at some emotional praise scenes, he is the one with a strategy encaged by DJ Rod as Ricky, grabbing Rod and anything along with there! Apparently, it is still something that has the potential to bring him back a step, and such development of character of Efron was quite typical for the director during filming his undertakings from better comedies.
Coming to Cena – he completely embraces Rod and pushes the persona into extremes, in this case Rod inhales the signs of alcohol withdrawal, poorly imitates the famous rock stars who sing cum puns, or tries bringing in information and anecdotes he had acquired Inc luded 20 4 hours earlier in a simple conversational context as if he has been jailer Ricky all his life, going to remote countries, working with Bono, and defeating leukemia.
Even with the mediocre storyline, Cenashows why he is a movie star by probably being the only one who manages to maintain a straight face while speaking or doing outrageous things out of context and out of the ordinary actions .
As hilarious as it is to watch Cena trying to sop what he believes are assassins in Britney Spears’s “Hit Me Baby One More Time” attire or Efron sad where he can’t get Rod to stop being Ricky, such other weaknesses of the movie make one unable to relish any instance for a long stay.
Sooner or later, something will be said or done that will be so out of place that it will spoil the atmosphere or a joke will be overused and it will simply become stale. “Ricky Stanicky” isn’t very good rather disappointing.
At its worst, a sobering reminder that there are some children’s games that there is no need to butcher.
