While people play drinking games in a local pub, a masked murderer infiltrates the premises. Staff members try their best to maintain the status quo until the police arrive but is it too late? Will anyone be left alive by the time help gets to them?
What is the reason behind the constant slaughter happening at the bar? Why has the tavern owner decided to lock the doors and confine everybody inside until the Police show up? Why are all the town’s residents gigantic, old, drunken, story spewing, perverts? Why does it matter? There’s another slasher that has made it’s way to town and does a great deal of enjoying itself as a slasher. Slaughtered (that goes by Schooner of Blood too) is able to self-reve an almost dead subgenre with a sprinkle of mask-wearing insane killers. The deaths in the movie are really boring and the plug-in performance system is an awesome joy tool, but Slaughtered gets points for spirit and unending masked slosher enthusiast.
Regarding the acting, Chloe Boreham’s version of The Final Girl comes with several hurdles to cross, including a murder and a slippery bathroom floor that leads to her knocking herself out. This leads to the more notable standout performance from Cassandra Swaby, who plays Sarah, the cute little tease who has a jealous red herring boyfriend, and a line of guys assuming they could take his place. The remaining actors do what they can with their lack of proper preparation and are somewhat acceptable.
Slaughtered marks the first film directed by Kate Glover, who got inspiration from a saw hanging on the wall of a bar she worked at and proceeded to shoot the movie there. The storyline is thin and the ending is unsatisfactory, but whooshed is synonymous with low budget, as that is the rush that comes from greed and wanting to make the most out of a specific location. Miller’s bar is a set-piece, meaning it does double duty the script shows relish and glee over the different things that can committed murder with, from normal guns to keg taps. This is overall a fantastic roller coaster, but the ending leaves a bitter taste that will leave many disappointed and scratching their heads.
Originally called Schooner of Blood, this latest entry in the evergrowing line of Australian horror films has a rather generic title of Slaughtered hoping that no one confuses a schooner with a boat instead of the intended drinking glass. Kate Glover has solidified her position in the film industry and we hope this leads to more titles sure to expect a fresh new voice in horror cinema.
