The Image of You
The Image of You
There are certain instances in life where one can watch a film and have no expectations, and this feeling can be the source of the most enjoyable surprises. With regard to the title The Image of You, the only thing I was aware of was that it was an erotic thriller and that Pretty Little Liars fan favorite Sasha Pieterse was going to play twins in it.
The end result was nowhere near the kinds of outcomes I had been expecting, and the movie was riddled with more than its fair share of exciting story turns that are likely to please many soap opera fans. Jeff Fisher, the director, understands what should make it to the screen as his emphasis on the female perspective makes the most of the eye candy that is Parker Young. The Image of You has the tragic sense of an adapted Lifetime movie, and it even has sexy script and performers that blast with camp.
Identical twins Anna and Zoe (Pieterse) couldn’t be more different. Anna is the gentle talker who was always nice, while her sister Zoe is more of a bully. Ever since birth, Anna and Zoe have been very close with each other; during the breezy opening credits, scenes of twins are seen. Even more puzzling, one of the twins has apparently murdered the other one without any feeling of remorse. Let’s put all these issues aside for a second. Back to the present, Zoe tells Anna to update her dating profile in order to have any chances of getting a man. This time, instead of 31, Anna should say she is 29. Lying, according to Zoe, is the basic glue of every relationship.
Zoe’s adulting advice seems to have worked exceptionally. In Anna’s first attempt at meeting someone from a dating site, she goes on a date with a man called ‘Gus’ who is quick to reveal that his real name is Nick Young and the two instantly seem to get along. This is just the beginning the two have chemistry which leads to great sequences montaging their romance. Anna tells Nick that her two hundred percent honesty rule will be the hardest obstacle that they might face. As if any other challenge would never come in between their love.
A few more pancakes this time with a liquidized romantic duo, Anna and Nick become partners in crime over a lovey-dovey mass of sweet-scented bread shaped into hearts. The next moment comes as a shock not just for Anna but also for Nick: the two decide to tie the knot and don’t even care about the reasons, thus how Zoe did get stressed. As for Zoe, who is convinced that Nick cannot be trusted, what unfolds next will shock everyone. Not laying too much expectation, the intensity of shocks and surprises just increases as Focus on You comes to its spine chilling conclusion.
First of all, I feel the need to say that this is not the greatest movie of all time, but it doesn’t try to be one either, so one can live with it for what it is. The excessive and unnecessary steadicam work, character arcs that seem to have been written on a bad day, and ridiculous plot holes galore; watching the movie will be disappointing for any worthwhile cinema.
Thankfully, The Image Of You does not attain such heights which would require deeper evaluation, it is simply primed for enjoyment. The charms when looked at the surface are nearly impossible to resist. Parker Young and Sasha Pieterse are without any doubts wonderful supporting actors and they look good together. Seeing the two enjoy each other’s company is already very pleasant.
On the other hand, the film really pulls it’s punches and goes full throttle onto the screen; there is no holding back. There are many sex scenes, sexy underwear, and cheeky bum in the movie, which all help deliver the theme. Even though Nestor Carbonell, who plays Anna’s father, and Mira Sorvino, who plays Anna’s mother, are also present in the plot there is no way one will watch this for the family drama. The clash between twins continues to escalate, and the tension is even more gratifying than one had expected. Come for the enticing violence, stay for the raunchiness of a bloody brilliant erotic thriller.
