A self-absorbed middle-aged man tries to relive his youth by courting younger men. He faces even more complex challenges due to his abusive behavior.
Narcissist is Eric Cacaccio’s newest short drama film that narrates a superficial romance between Evan, a sensitive young writer with undying affection for Rob, an older and sophisticated gentleman, and Rob himself, who is a sociopath.
With heartwarming and universal stories, Narcissist effortlessly captivates the audience as a brilliant work of art. The term gay men is also a part of the film’s context. Nevertheless, what makes Narcissist strong is how sexual orientation is not its central argument because anyone who has loved and has lost love and loved again could easily substitute for any of the characters. In this regard, Casaccio is not only a fierce storyteller but also a deeply understanding social watcher. Most important to note is the fact that Casaccio has the calm to let his story get told without melodrama and control and that is quite wonderful for short cinema or for any film!
Something else that piques my interest concerning Narcissist is the fact that there are multiple supporting stories of equal proportion to the main story, and none dominates the other. The effectiveness of this powerful writing technique is so subtle in the film that it’s almost blindingly invisible. The other aspect of the film that has left me in awe is the acting in Narcissist, along with the stark realism portrayed through the film’s cinematography.
As for weaknesses, some may consider Rob’s and Evan’s romantic encounters to be overly prolonged. Initially, I thought that way. Yet, after giving it further consideration, I observed a multitude of emotions on a spectrum from childish and hopeless to something that no human being should ever endure and experience in a lifetime.
If “Narcissist” is any indication of Eric Casaccio’s epic directorial prowess, I can only wonder in amazement what he has in store for future films.
