The Story Line An unlucky bounty hunter is targeted by a furious madam and her goons when he eliminates her boss.
A lot of people claimed that Shaft was the definition of a blaxploitation classic. I found it to be all sizzle and no steak after watching the movie. Sure, “Shaft” was cool, but he didn’t do much and the film dragged on. In my eyes, the real contender was 1974’s action-packed shoot-em-up, Truck Turner, starring Isaac Hayes as the world’s biggest badass!
Hayes is Mac Truck Turner and a bounty hunter who narratively has a life that is far more complicated than he’d like. Turner is broke and has to live in a slum while caring for a cat that urinates on his clothes while he is not paying attention, and has a girlfriend who happens to be a part-time kleptomaniac and is currently in prison. Turner’s lively partner Jerry( Alan Weeks) is rather entertained by this whole situation. This pair received a call to bust a pimp who skipped bail, however, the whole situation was not as simple as it sounded. The pimp, Gator, is a dangerously wild individual that will be difficult to catch.
It’s fortunate that Turner is always up for the challenge, and before the day is out, he blows Gator away with his trusty 357 Colt Python. This is when Gator’s number one madam, Dorinda (Nicholls), gets extremely unhappy and puts a hit on Turner and his partner. That’s when the fireworks really start. Vicious, but coldly calculating thug Harvard Blue (Yaphet Kotto in another brilliant role) beats his partner to the punch and soon gets soaked in blood like a true violent psychopath.
Everything about Truck Turner suggests it being as excessive as it truly is, and it does not disappoint: out of control? Indeed! Expletives? Got it! Action? Without a doubt, it is. The action hero is played by Hayes, a role he embodies with so much energy and confidence while making Turner a down-to-earth guy with actual real-life issues to solve. Alan Weeks as Turner’s partner Jerry is hilarious to watch and the two of them as a pair undoubtedly have excellent rapport. As for Nicholle, with her performance as Dorinda the prostitute madam, she completely buries everything her character from Star Trek was known for while giving starvation and abuse to a set of hospital-bound women. You get to see Nicholls in this movie and she is brilliant one of the most revered blaxploitation villains known. Her sidekick Kotto notoriously steals all scenes, but with a finish every soul he had ever brought to life with the sweetest sorrow. His death scene was a true work of art. Rest in peace Mr Kotto, you were marvelous. Turner’s girl Annie played by Annazaette Chase is highly animated, and with Hayes, she creates a scene that makes one smile over and over again.
This film was directed by A-list director Jonathan Kaplan (Unlawful Entry, Immediate Family) who is well respected. He did a superb job capturing the violence and action in a very vivid manner. Not to mention, the score composed by Hayes was also impressive!
