Upgraded
Upgraded: Ana reports to a designing office dreaming of post-modernist architecture and there she becomes an art intern at some point. On the friendly side, Ana also happens to sit next to a handsome and ridiculously wealth William in the plane.
This sweet rom-com focuses on the lives of people who are in love but are struggling to balance between love and career as well as hopes and dreams, only London and New York city served as a cherry on top of Lancaster being a gem even in the lucky years.
Within that context, Updated Carlson Young is more than able to spare quite a number of minutes for the enthralling themes of performing, acting and fabricating especially as they relate to the abstract concept of the feminine ambitions of contemporary jobs tropes the art industry comprehensively.
On the other hand, each and every character is always putting up a show in all these attributes, however, it may come as a surprise that although many of them are in the business of making films and apparently see acting as the only salvation available to them, most of them actually want to be able to act and do something else too.
The narrative of the film Upgraded revolves around Ana played by Camila Mendes, a struggling, young New York based woman aspiring to become an art auctioneer and work with elite and high profile clients but spends over three months couch surfing in the tiny dinghy apartment of her squabbling sister and her soon to be husband, and there is an immediate sympathy and will for her to do well.
An engaging performance, an authentic interest in and understanding of how to ‘read’ artwork, and this – the moment when the storyline is presented with a potential suitor who, for reasons understood of the viewer, does not change the focus of the plot which has been about Ana going up the ranks of assisting a rather ruthless art director Claire (Marisa Tomei) and all the ‘new’ opportunities that it comes with, makes up the interesting part of the story of Upgraded. The protagonists stand out and feel real, just like the course of events as they unfold.
Over the shoulder, while here, there are three credited screenwriters Christine Lenig, Luke Spencer Roberts and Justin Matthews. The tone may wander sometimes for some characters and jokes, some may be too much or even muddled unto themselves.
If the internal structure of the storytelling doesn’t escape the sort of questions that Claire is described as ones bringing out the most from her assistants, then how come is she comfortable with two other non performers and still her Danjana expects Ana to take over the lot).
But there is basically an understanding of strain between the somberness of preparation before busy work and relationship comedy or drama which is what Ana appears to be trying to achieve in her own life.
Within the next few weeks, upon being awarded the opportunity to help Claire with an important auction in November in London, Ana is on a flight to London but also has an embarrassing first moment with the son of a well-known actress in the UK, William (Archie Renaux), who meets her in the plane, and gets infatuated with her the moment he hears her boastful lies about how important she is in her propaganda.
Using a typical woman’s tactic, she tells him that she is the youngest and the most successful art director to date, believing he is like most men who are turn on by girl’s wealth and position. While this man is trying to climb up the ladder of success, he has aspirations of his own which actually interestingly involves him coaching a kid’s soccer team.
Since Ana’s Place of Work is located very close to the family home, English William’s mother Catherine (Lena Olin) is keen to give her a ride and also very keen to make both of them meet more often, which simply should not happen, considering the latter is often quite overwhelmed with work, comparing it to doing three people’s work. Having such connections does make that job easier, especially when Claire is desperate for a hot ticket to a sold out performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Of course, a degree of emotion K tends to go through, a bear in mind, a pardon of violation which she does not wish to undo in any of the ways she goes about earning the goodwill Claire has granted basing on the actions previously performed.
The heat of the relationship rises in ordinary ways and this time the auction status becomes more twitter than cuddle status and everything happens as predicted except this one warm ’emotionally reading’ honesty is still present. More than the one should by the closure of Upgraded step up to pay back the sprint back down. That said, there was no need for the overly apparent happy ending to the story.
