A heartfelt and emotional journey of love and self-discovery, the Albany Road film features Lynn Whitfield and featuring Emmy winner and Tony Drama Desk and Grammy Award-winning actress Renée Elise Goldsberry, J. Alphonse Nicholson, an upcoming superstar. Albany Road is unique as it is written and directed by Christine Swanson. Albany Road is an assortment of the classic road we makut, always dealing with contrasting forces together out of necessity and circumstance rather than free will.
Directed by Christine Swanson who also finished writing the whole screenplay of the film, Albany Road is surely a twist of her very talented light, as she incorporates her roots into an appealing romantic comedy. A twist on a road film completely stylized by Christine Swanson, who has taken love and humor, and interwoven through critical community issues, is something seen in Albany Road. Even Kathryn could reunite with her muse and the film’s star Renees, to make witticism and tenderness to be seen so required.
In the movie, Goldsberry portrays Celeste, an executive from New York City, who flies over to Washington D.C. in order to attend what is the most important meeting of her life that will launch her career and justify the sacrifices she has made to achieve it. While Whitfield is casted as Paula, the mother of her ex-fiancé who was a source of headache for him which led to their breakup. J. Alphonse portrays Kyle, the stunned son and ex-fiance, who doesn’t get the exact reasons of why the relationship broke-up but has gotten over it in no time.
Celeste, an executive residing in Manhattan is late for the crucial presentation and shoulder a massive burden of flight delays and snowstorm so bad that the entire trip should be like one to remember. And over the holiday season, with winter’s fury, Paula too cannot reach her family as easily as she wants. Now, with the snowstorm and delays working against them, Celeste and Paula, clashing the whole time, must fight their way to Washington D.C.
Albany Road takes us on a road trip with the black Kenyan American actors to present the road movie genre where black actors have hardly ever featured. The independent film also allows us an insight into the lives of the black East Coast people who are making it and what they deal with in their lives regardless of the outward appearance.
The actors, Whitfield and Goldsberry are great in performance displaying their struggles and growth as they battle their problems in what seems to be a perfectly directed snowstorm. As tens of viewers believed after his appearance – Nicholson played the kind of Kyle that they will be thinking about and wondering whether to feel sorry for him or consider him as an immature and spoiled brat.
Apart from a good performance of actress Lisa Arrindell who played Carol, the video is also about Joe Holt as Billy, Carol’s dedicated spouse, Gary Dourdan as Phil, Celes’s second love and Kyle’s naive partner Rachael Hicks as Morgan, Albany Road is a dramatic film with an expected outcome. Albany Road also has a wide application since it addresses black concerns while advancing their culture.
Swanson co-produces films with her husband studio executive Michael Swanson through their company Faith Filmworks. They were so passionate about this particular film that they decided to finance it on their own. A true independent film, the Champaign, IL shot, Albany Road has been carving its niche at numerous festivals, winning accolades at Ebertfest and most recently the Best Film award at MVAAFF. Albany Road will be screened at the BronzeLens Film Festival in Atlanta, on Saturday, August 24 at 7:45 pm at the Tara Theater.
Albany Road is an endearing independent feature which I believe will appeal to multigenerational audiences, it offers something familiar yet different enough to entertain, warm the heart, and move the soul.
