RUN! These are the only words Billie Kope seems to hear as she runs into the woods of an island she wakes up on. The strangers who are asking her to run, she is not familiar with. Even the men in the paramilitary outfits who are chasing her are a mystery to her. Heck, she doesn’t even know how she got there wherever ‘there’ is. She has no choice but to sprint and try to piece the puzzle together later.
Billie (Natalie Burn) has a background in Russian Special Forces and skills that she acquired to assist in the search for her missing sister which she is doing while trying to solve the mystery she has found herself in. “Awaken” delves into the seedy side of human trafficking and has the same feel as “Surviving The Game” or some of those 80s action franchises that came on Saturday mornings.
The good part was and is seeing actors such as David Keith and Michael Pare embellish the plot rather than merely participating in it. For far too long, these two have been wasted in bit parts, and it is refreshing to have them back. Burn exhibits her athleticism as well as her prowess as a fighter, becoming one who is truly believable. She performs the action efficiently and seamlessly blends into her role as a badass who has been training and honing her skills for years, and yet, to my knowledge, she has no experience in martial arts whatsoever. A one-time ballerina, Burn is an action star in the making.
“Awaken” isn’t without its flaws. For comparison’s sake, there are some quite astounding changes in the scenery where the matching up of the landscapes is rather out of synch, Daryl Hannah is but a shadow of herself as a vile and menacing villainess whom for some reason everybody seems to fear, and an unrealistic romance that comes across as somewhat overdone and unnecessary. There were other stories in the film that I would have preferred these other ones being lessened or removed and more elaborated on. Overall though, “Awaken” is good, pulpy fun.
“Awaken” presents an ensemble cast featuring Daryl Hannah, Vinnie Jones, Edward Furlong, and Jason London, though the focus here is on Natalia Burn. The ballet dancer from Kiev, Ukraine has choreographed for Nelly and Paula Abul and has even managed to get parts in movies like Expendables 3 because of her fluency in five languages. Burn does not just act in “Awaken,” she also wrote and produced the film through her production company, 7 Heaven Productions. The more fascinating tale goes of a Ukrainian dancer who transformed into a Hollywood mini-mogul and is certainly more interesting and highly motivational.
