I am personally not fond of the Lo Wei films starring Jackie and I am particularly glad he managed to get out of his studio at a later stage, which was not very simple for him, which in turn resulted in some dreadful movies like Fearless Hyena 2, but I will discuss that in some other review. It’s a double-edged sword, he could do good movies like a lot of bad ones like Magnificent Bodyguards, and then there are movies like this, average and some would say that is worse than being bad because they lack passion and are soon forgotten.
The movie’s opening depicts a battle between two men, one of whom is Chan’s master. But there is another battle afterward, between the master and some evil master, who beats Jackie’s master so badly that he eventually dies. Jackie becomes really angry and promises to avenge his master. Later on, it is revealed that the evil master killed Jackie’s master because he had an affair with the evil master’s wife over 18 years ago. Is somebody binge-watching soap operas? And now, his wife hangs herself out of guilt or sorrow. This has taken a very dark turn.
Years go by and Jackie is finally able to take down the not so evil master. Jackie is now at a point in his life where he is prepared to exact tragic revenge on the evil master. Jackie goes to the master, but the master tells him that he needs three more days. Since Jackie is extremely empathetic, he decides to give the master the days he requested. San Thye, the master’s wife has been poisoned and so there is a new plot. The master requested three days because Jackie was going to open spoilers. The master has now cut off his leg and has placed it in a box. Jackie won’t want to fight him anymore. Spoilers end here.
Now Jackie has to get the drugs for the master’s wife. Apparently, now Jackie has to fight for a drug syndicate. But anything is better than mundane work, I suppose. The story has many shifts to build up a captivating narrative that many viewers will be able to appreciate. When compared to other Kung Fu movies, it did not look like fight sequences were done to string some noodles. This film is more engaging. The problem is the execution, and this is where Lo Wei fails most, making it dull and bland.
I think the fight scenes are fair, but they do not have the creativity typical of other Chan movies, particularly those Chan movies with Yuen Woo-Ping.
All in all, it was a nice Chan film, although not the one you would typically expect from him not very enjoyable or humorous, just okay. It will not convert people to Jackie Chan supporters, but for those who already are, then, why not? Recommended.
