Episodes: Ukraine at The World Cup
Episodes: Ukraine at The World Cup: The documentary series, ‘Episodes’ that has ‘Ukraine at the Mundial’ in it also has the film titled Shadow of Chernobyl which chronicles the events leading to the famed game STALKER creation, and the episode Don’t Switch! – The KNIFE! Films studio which has worked on this project previously released this documentary series Flash, film Next, and documentary Stories of Ukrainian IT.
‘Ukraine at the Mundial’ is a ‘Fun in the past’ excursion when for the first time in the history of independence. Ukraine reaches the final stage without being prey to playoffs.
The authors give a short history of the national team and, as a reminder, explain that even during the days of the Legendary Valery Lobanovsky, the team could not get past the qualifying phase. Intelligent radio listeners may have a faint recollection of how the eventual refrain “Our goal is 2002” was manipulated about but never became a reality.
In September 2003 Oleg Blokhin assumed control of the team and immediately shocked everyone by saying that he wanted the team to go to the World Championships right from the first position of the group. Even more so, there were worthy adversaries if one remembers – tough Denmark, Turkey and its crazy fans and European champion Greece.
Subsequently Blokhin confessed to Viktor Vatsko that this particular ambitious thesis was almost too good to be true especially when it was not supported by facts and was said for no good reason. But who could have expected at that time that he would be able to keep this promise?
Few other game stories about national team and its most crucial game segments are complemented by comments of civil servants who were factually and actively involved in those events – Alexander Shovkovsky, Andrey Shevchenko, Ruslan Rotan, coach Semyon Altman etc.; as well as well known football professionals and specialists such as commentators Viktor Vatsko and Igor Tsyganyk and late chief editor Football magazine Artem Frankov.
For what recalls Vatko, that Ukraine reached the 2006 World Cup was a great positive explosion to Ukrainian fans mass. This aspect of overall happiness and looking forward to the football celebration was conveyed by our performers starting from Yurkesh to Sashka Polozhinsky employing plain rhymes like “football-goal” at several instances. But most interesting, of course, was listening to players themselves.
In particular, Alexander Shovkovsky remembers how hard it was for him to play for the national team. Of particular note is how he recalls the awe instilled when the team played against Slovenes during the play-off for Euro 2000 qualification and terrible roles were reversed in the game (how can one forget the legendary Sasha, Where Have You Been? uttered by Alexander Zhurakhovsky).
Which was followed by the triumphant redemption – in the quarterfinal of 2006 World Cup during penalties against Switzerland. And on the turn of the Euro2016 we got our payback against the Slovenians.
Among the disclosing emotions that Andrei Shevchenko shared, there was the one related to the penalty shootout timing: we now see shevchenko s sentiments during duel with Swiss goalkeeper Zuberbuhler. The index finger discs fragment contained a very high probability that caused by my heavily bruised wrist in one of matches of the Italian Championship, Shevchenko would not be able to participate in the tournament period either.
When in October 1999, Shevchenko dashed Russia’s hopes of qualifying for the European Championship in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium which has a 100, 000 spectators where he netted a brace and even President Putin watched him do this, that was the turning point. Fillimonov’s suicide and Gusev’s dazed expression are still hot views in every Ukrainian’s memory.
If you sit down to “Episodes: Ukraine at The World Cup” in front of the TV, chances are that you might observe some curious movements of the camera in relation to the person interviewed such as the one described above, which I can only call rather strange or “incorrect”, on many occasions.
It would appear, for example, that this angle is inclined inappropriately to one side or positioned inappropriately at the bottom of the medium; there are cases when the person is filmed with a side angle while looking sideways with his face towards the camera. It also often shoots toward the light, on the footage.
Sometimes the subjects go off animation completely; unfortunately, the studio overdubs in the several interviews are very worth noticing; there are moments where Zenit St. Petersburg youth coach Tolik Timoshchuk runs into the frame; others – when Vatsko is speaking – quite justified on site moment’s angles designy and turning themselves orientate quite magnificently inside out towards the content. But all of these are run of the mill roughnesses their roughness (clumsiness) bandwidth, are either incidental or intended and do not block any of the understanding of any voice-over.
“Episodes: Ukraine at The World Cup” is a very entertaining little their only people who have ever been interested in football will appreciate. So I say these next words for fans who have been ‘injured’ for years by the defeats of the team and ‘exulted’ by its victories: Who nearly passed out when Milevsky did what he did against England? There were also many who cried out their heart on that night Sheva scored two goals against Sweden. Who knows how much they deserve this?
But now — guided by the star of that very 2006 team, Sergei Rebrov — the Ukraine national team is starting to think about Euro 2024, which will take place in Germany. And so, while we are all still here to see it and alive enough or willing enough to care about what happens, I would like to extend that wish this summer to every last one of them, every ounce of Ukrainian joy that’s there to be had.
