Faith of Angels
Faith of Angels
Faith of Angels: I would say that the faith-based genre is one of the genres that I can contend with the best of my colleagues in the arena of film criticism. Having said that I do understand the pitfalls that the genre has to the extent that it is one of the reasons why many connect with it.
That said one of the greatest contributions to the genre in the recent past is filmmaker Garrett Batty who directed remarkable movies like Freetown, Out of Liberty among others. What makes people argue that his movies are both engaging and emit zeroes in religious attributes is the fact that he understand the people as individuals while the plots are based on faith.
Even his new and weaker film called Faith of the Angels, is entertaining as this is a good story developed well channeled within the mormon context that makes it good to behold. I have to admit that probably most of the Nicole Olson’s works I liked is in evaluating but according to her self perception in Faith of Angels controversy is almost absent.
Once the movie was completed I was able to speak with Garrett and lead John Michael Finley for the Hallmarkies Podcast. I met her after a Mipcom screening with John Michael Finley to discuss filming of the podcast.
Angle of faith that depicts the true storyline of Joshua Dennis which took place when the latter was reported stuck in an abandoned mine located in Tooele, Utah. Finley plays John Skinner who feels a strong urge to participate in the search rather than rationalize the reason why he should stay back. The sheriff (Cameron Arnett) however is against it because it involves civilians after an accident that happened last year.
My favorite aspect of this film is the journey Skinner goes on. As a faith person, I can understand the difficulty of wanting to pursue a particular course of action that seems illogical to the people around someone. Is that not the sheer essence of faith?
There is this inertia that I need to do something far bigger than myself that involves something rather unstated though known to be true. This is a very hard concept to make cinematic and the team here did just about as good a job as you could.
The rest of the story with Joshua is exciting enough however the pace at times can be unhurried and a few segments feel quite redundant. Nonetheless, if you have been yearning for hopeful fiction about a real life miracle, Faith of Angels is one film that will meet your quest. It was well made for non Latter-day Saints people as it is a movie that most other than LDS are going to appreciate as much of the activities are in the cave and are ecumenical.
