Years back, I made a friend with filmmaker, journalist, and musician Chris Alexander when he started sending me press releases from Full Moon Entertainment. It took me some time before I realized that the Chris Alexander that I was receiving these press releases from was the same CA that worked at Fangoria.
I will say, I have great respect for Chris and the mark he has left in the genre we all appreciate. Although, I will admit to having only seen a few of his films, the ones I have seen were quite refreshing. So, when I got the email requesting me to review his latest film “Girl With a Straight Razor” I sorted my schedule pronto. I want to thank Chris for allowing Horror Society and me the privilege to watch his new piece!
The film centers on a young girl who’s deeply troubled by something as she attempts to explore the depths of the straight razor that she possesses. She roams the streets stabbing and cutting the people she comes across while also exploring her sexuality with the weapon.
This one I was looking forward to and after giving it a shot, I was quick to see that it is not my kind of film. Like I do with most of my negative reviews, just because I didn’t like a film doesn’t mean it is bad. It often means that I was not able to fully appreciate it, or didn’t understand it well. In this case though, I feel that that is the case for Girl with a Straight Razor.
The movie had good visuals, elaborate editing, and good acting but I was still more confused. I am not the most intelligent person and tend to steer away from thoughtfully put-together films, much like Chris Alexander’s neo-giallo, so keep my review in mind. If you can understand the film, then maybe it is quite entertaining.
This one has a great performance. Despite the cast being small, every one of them delivers a great performance. Chappell is the star and his on-screen foray into beauty is unrivaled in indie horror. The character she portrays seems like she has a lot to say but judging from the way the film was shot, most of it is left untapped. The story for this one is straightforward but is multilayered. I will not pretend that I know every single detail of what the film was trying to portray, but I know what I did see. The film follows a woman who has an incredible thirst for blood and at times gets turned on by her weapon of choice. The premise is a lot more interesting than what is given, but for those of you who like assiduousness and eagerness mixed with Giallo, this one will suit you well.
At last, this movie features several violent scenes alongside decent special effects. However, anyone in search of a film heavy on the gore will end up with nothing more than disappointment. It appears that this film offers much more in terms of character study than the blood-filled horror flicks that people are used to. To sum up, Girl with a Straight Razor just was not for me. It’s not my type of movie but the way Ali Chappell performed and the way each scene was shot was captivating Nonetheless, I’ll concede that fans of this genre or subgenre, especially may be able to tolerate it.
