In It Takes A Christmas Village, we meet Alex Foster (Brooke Nevin), the mayor who is fighting to stop some troublesome construction from shutting down her town’s shops during the festive season. With just six days to go before Christmas, Alex has a eureka moment a Christmas market where locals can sell their goods. The only issue is that the only location available is on the Hawkins’ farm and the town’s townspeople haven’t forgotten about the disputes from previous business failures. As Alex talks to the private Darcy Hawkins (Corey Silver), she tries to ignite a romance but unknowingly fans the flames to old rivalries in the process.
It Takes A Christmas Village is a straightforward romance movie that adds a nice touch to the holiday season, and was directed by Corey Sevier. Without a doubt, this film is one of the many that define the holiday season filled with hallmark romance movies. The warm chemistry between Sevier and Brooke Nevin makes Village’s simple storyline flow effortlessly. In addition, the film also captures the cold Hamilton Ontario winter, which makes it feel realistic and festive. Unlike Summer-Christmas films, this one does not have fake snow. No criticism can be made against Christmas Villages for using the nostalgia-filled elements of the holidays together with a simple script.
Every now and then, one can admire how beautiful the simplicity in the Village is. It does feel like having warm cocoa on a cold, wintery evening. The movie does have a familiar premise, but it was written by Kate Pragnall (she is also Sevier’s wife), so we could come to expect something charming. The stakes within the movie look overwhelming, but in reality, saving the businesses within the town at Christmas is a lot easier than it sounds.
Mayor Alex?s Christmas Market is set up in a week’s time, which is impressive given how big it is. The romance develops immediately after a lucky run-in. Competitive family members set their differences aside for a snowball fight. While most of these films would be critiqued for their storytelling methods, there is a clear reason as to why these movies are popular amoungs the masses.
Nonetheless, it is important to remember that the film’s theme also includes discussions about moving on from one’s past. Many years ago, the Hawkins’ business decisions caused damage which led much of the town to associate the Hawkins’ name with suffering. As a result of the dislike from the community due to his father’s actions, Darcy avoids public interaction and lives as a recluse with his grandmother. Alex’s father also has the same struggle because he seems not to forget his dealings with the elderly Hawkins regard.
Even so, neither Darcy nor Alex seem ready to accept themselves to be prisoners of actions carried out many years ago. Consequently, Alex and Darcy take steps to correct these wrongs, even though their families have remained in an unsolvable decades-long rivalry. What Alex’s father holds very dear, the belief that the Hawkins name is of bad trust, Alex does not agree with. At the same time, is still (albeit unwillingly) prepared to let the city use his family’s farm for the Christmas market. This serves as a reminder of what happens when one tries to protect the next generation from the fallout of one’s actions. No matter what has transpired before, Alex and Darcy are excited to build something new together.
It Takes A Christmas Village will resonate with anyone looking to get into the spirit of the festive season thanks to its warm and heartwarming undertones.
At its heart, Village is nothing but a feel-good romance that makes you want to share it with the people around you. There is a charm in the narrative structure as it has a sweetness infused in the storytelling and manages to capture the heart despite it being formulaic. In addition, the undoubted love that sparks between Nevin and Sevier makes this one of the festive highlights of the Christmas holiday calendar.
