A horror comedy, Lillith, is co-written by Esposito Lee and Stannard Luke and it is filled with mediocre plot twists that make it unwanted, making it easy to understand why many people claim it to be a horror comedy fantasy.
In the film ‘Lillith’ Jenna (Nell Kessler) walks in on her boyfriend Brad (Michael Finnigan) getting intimate with another woman, turning the relationship she trusted completely. Brad seems to have taken a lover and a terrible twist of fate, it’s also premised on Jenna and Brad’s 5th anniversary. Filled with sorrow and rage, she goes to her friends Emma (Robin Carolyn Parent) and Charlie (Taylor Turner). Emma is completely obsessed with Charlie while Charlie desperately tries to help her get back at Brad.
All that is required is to summon a demon, cherry-picked straight from an arcade machine.
The demon she summons is the Lilith succubus (Savannah Whitten) who unsparingly has sex with Brad and then proceeds to initiate him into death. That’s something I heard she sourced to gamble with. Jenna did not expect this, and therefore she wishes Lilith back to hell. Since Lilith clearly prefers living on Earth, she sticks around and decides to cause chaos instead. Not before enrolling in college the others go too and trying to make some friends.
Undoubtedly, all the laughter in this horror comedy can be credited to the Lilith character. Savannah Whitten is killing it here, flaunting her sex appeal and using it to seduce the college guys. While she is a demon, she is also quite funny, if not a bit out of place. Whitten gives so much life to the character that you might find yourself actually feeling a little bad for her in one scene where, after offering a hand of friendship, she gets rejected by the so-called heroes. She is wonderful.
Now we will discuss the film’s biggest issue and, well, it’s everyone else. Our heroes are quite frustrating and dull. A group of characters that have the depth of a pancake and seem very dim-witted with barely a dash of humor to them. Every single one of them is overshadowed by the overbearing figure of Lilith and it means there’s no stakes because caring about what happens to them is very difficult. It’s not quite the fault of the actors who all do a reasonable job with very little writing. They just weren’t given much.
Another problem is that Lilith feels surprisingly tamer than it should be. A motion picture about a sexually promiscuous demon who murders her victims should have, at the very least, been a lot more creative with the gore. Why is it that most of it isn’t shown in the film? It is such a waste.
It almost makes the film feel like a ‘teen-horror, which is really strange since it clearly tries to take a jab at that type of movie.
And then there is the ending. An ending that is quite rushed and anti-climactic for the most part. It is just like the frustrated bowing of a stand up comedian after a bad show. Besides one last funny swipe at Hollywood, it is an ending that passes with the kind of reaction a person gives a yawn ii.e shrug shoulders.
So that is Lilith. A horror comedy that fails at being either.
